This timber town lattice truss span, which was built in 1879-1880 by Benton Jones and George K. Foster to cross the Middle River, is the longest of the bridges surviving in Madison County. It was added to the National Registry of Historic Places in 1976. It can be approached via a gravel road in good condition from either St. Charles or Winterset. Parking is easy.

There are six bridges total. All are nice and easy to find. We were there on a week day, and there were only a few visitors at each of the bridges. You will enjoy this one.

This covered bridge is down a gravel road but there are signs posted to help find it. There is a small creek that runs under it and you can walk across it but not drive across.

I only got to see two of the Madison County Bridges. You are not able to drive through this one so you must park and walk a short distance to and through the bridge. This bridge is rather plan in comparison to others I have seen. I wanted to see them all, but they are all located on dusty gravel roads and my husband who is not a covered bridge fan was very upset about driving in those condition. I do have a friend who so wants to see the ones here so perhaps a return trip with her.

From G50, turn onto and followed Holliwell Bridge Road to Holliwell Bridge. This bridge is just up a short drive to the south side and is open to foot traffic and easy to photograph. It was built in 1880. It is quiet and you look down to farms. Oddly, there is a more modern small bridge in he middle of a sea of grass a short distance away.

Pleasant dusty trip on a great day . Neat history on the bridges as to their origins and relocations of some over the years.

One of the six Bridges of Madison County. This is the longest covered bridge and timber bridge in the state of Iowa. Like other bridges in the area, it is easily accessible and worthy of a photo or two.
