Very interesting. Definitely a must visit but only 4 stars as the place was not properly maintained eventhough there was an entrance fee. Many plants were either overgrown or wilting. Visited back in June 2019. Hopefully they will improve the place and put up more articles for people to read. I wasn't even aware about the death march that took place and I'm a local tourist!

Beautifully kept gardens. One for Australian, one for English and one for people of Borneo and one for all the names of those who died on the Sandakan Ranau death March by the Japanese during World War II. There's displays of information, a souvenir shop and cafe. It's small but worth a visit. The perfume from all the pink roses in the English garden was intoxicating.

The War Memorial was built out of respect for those that died in the Sandakan to Ranau “Death Marches”. It is an excellent place to visit and try to imagine the unspeakable horror and atrocities that were inflicted on our soldiers with only 6 survivors out of some 2350 that were forced to march. More so to pay your respects and thanks to them for giving their lives so we could live ours. I recommend you first visit the audio room for a 20 minute presentation on some of the history to get acquainted. The memorial is divided into 4 gardens. The Australian, British, Malaysian Borneo, and the garden of Contemplation where an honour role lists each soldier that died on the 3 marches. You will probably spend an hour here by the time you pay your own respects. It s a place that touches your soul and leaves a lasting effect.

A quite beautiful place which, if visiting Ranau, you should take the time to visit and pay respect to the young men from Australia and Britain who lost their lives here, on the way here or in Sandakan prior to the Death Marches.

Visited on 17/11/2017 with friends. *Lest We Forget* . A must-visit in Kundasang. Established in 1962, this was one of the first memorials to commemorate the brave Australian and British Prisoners of War who died in Sandakan and during the infamous death marches to Ranau during World War II.
There are 4 gardens-the Australian Garden, the English Garden, the Borneo Garden and the Contemplation Garden and Pool - to represent the different nationalities.
Reached the top,is a beautiful view of Mount Kinabalu. We took many photos. Opening hours is 8:30am.

I am so glad we made an impromptu stop at the Kundasang War Memorial on our tour of Kinabalu National Park and Poring Hot Springs. Actually, it was the highlight of this tour, as I was not particularly taken with the Hot Springs. It was our driver who suggested the stop over, knowing that we are Australians.
This was one of the first memorials to commemorate the 2,428 brave Australian and British Prisoners of War who died in Sandakan and during the infamous death marches to Ranau during World War II.
I was not aware of the powerful story behind this memorial. There are storyboards and photographs depicting the fate of the 2,428 Australian and British POWs who died in Sandakan and also during the infamous death march to Ranau during World War II. The memorial also serves as a tribute to the many local people who risked their lives while aiding the prisoners of war. Only six Australians survived in this tragedy to tell their horror and there were no English survivors.
There are beautiful, well-tended gardens on a number of levels, and at the very top level, there is a wonderful view of the imposing Mt Kinabalu.
There is a Roll Of Honour, which states the names and ages of all soldiers who died. It was very sad to read of their plight, some being very young, and some being brothers.
A very powerful, quiet time to reflect on the fate of those who died for their country.

We viewed a very informative video. I can't begin to imagine how horrific it must have been to be a prisoner of war in Borneo. The gardens themselves were really lovely.

These gardens would have been really beautiful when first planted. They are well set out, like little rooms dedicated to each country. Unfortunately they need a bit of a face lift, wish I had my gardening gloves with me. Many of our group would have liked to gotten stuck into the weeding but time did not allow.
It is still worth a visit and a great credit to the old man who runs it.
Perhaps Australia could help support the restoration of this memorial to our POW's who gave their lives for their country.

An important part of Australia's war history and yet it is not widely taught or known - so sad, considering the immense suffering and sacrifice over 2000 Australian and 500 British soldiers gave during the Sandaken Death Marches. Out of these 2500 men, only 6 survived. Theses poignant gardens to the memory of these brave men are incredibly beautiful and moving. This is one of the most beautiful war memorial gardens I have ever visited and one I feel every Australian coming to Borneo should make the time to visit. Very beautiful. RIP brave men.
