This park and campground are very clean and well maintained. We hiked most of the trails around the lake and found them to be enjoyable (considering this is the midwest that typically lacks amazing hiking opportunities). We would return again to Viking Lake.

This park is very pretty and very clean. You call tent camp all the way to full service. Park rangers are great.

My daughter lives in Red Oak which is near this state park. I have been to it many times. I have taken my grandson out to it to fish. My grandson loved it but he kept throwing rocks in the water and walking out into the shallow water with the sandy bottom. We did not catch any fish when he was fishing. There are big hills around the edges of the lake. It has great views of the water. It is a nice place to picnic and camp. There are lots of big, mature trees. There are lots of parking spaces, There is a wide, gentle sloping boat ramp to launch fishing boats. It is very quiet. You can hear the birds singing.

I arrived earlier in the day on a recent Sunday and was pleasantly surprised to see many families out and about here. Kayaking, picnicking, walking, hiking, grilling out, even stand-up paddle boating. This park offers over 1000 acres for use. Over 72 modern campsites with 25 primitive. I youth campsite.21 full hook-ups.Trailer dump station. Lodge rental.137 acre man made lake. And a restaurant is located on site serving various American cuisine. Swimming is permitted. Lake fishing with boat rental is available. All in all a great place for families, in my opinion. Very popular in SW Iowa. Playground is available as well. Plenty of parking all over the park.
