Description:

Located in the heart of downtown Sioux City, the Sioux City Public Museum...

Located in the heart of downtown Sioux City, the Sioux City Public Museum features large, colorful exhibits, interactive displays, and much more. Visitors will discover the "Spirit of Sioux City" through a lively 12-minute orientation film in the ornate "corn palace theatre." A variety of hands-on experiences are available including the award-winning "Innovation I-Wall" and "The Big Dig," which replicates an active fossil dig site. Highlights of the permanent gallery are rare Native American artifacts from the area; Sioux City's first "horseless buggy," a 1901 Oldsmobile; a 1930 Kari-Keen airplane manufactured in Sioux City; and a 1918 Mack fire truck similar to ones used by the Sioux City Fire Department. The two-story Disaster and Recovery Wall features multi-media presentations of three major Sioux City catastrophes: the 1904 Pelletier Department Store fire, the 1953 Floyd River Flood, and the 1989 crash of United Airlines Flight 232. Temporary exhibits feature topics of local and regional interest.

Have visited the Museum on numerous occasions and took the opportunity to go down and visit the two summer exhibits which were fun and educational. Images from Rolling Stone Magazine was the focus of one, with local history also and the other featured "African Wax Prints" which was outstanding.

We loved this museum. It took you from the first days of Sioux City to modern times. Watch the film and then walk through the interactive exhibits. We all loved it.

New Sioux City public museum was very nice experience. We started with film of town's history, which was interesting. I was surprised that small city like Sioux City has such a good museum.

I took my brother in law there from out of town on July 14th. Good place to visit, nice exhibits and a great history lesson.

This is a nice small museum in an older building downtown. They display local and regional artifacts in an informative manner. Easy to find, street parking plentiful.

We loved this museum. Make sure you take the time to watch the intro movie. It was very entertaining and was a great way to start off the visit.

What a great museum in the heart of downtown Sioux City! The layout of the museum is great and it has good flow. There are millions of things to look at, read and be hands-on with. I thought for a smaller city, this provided a great snap-shot of their community and home from past to present.

I have to say that the 12 minute introductory video is one of the best I've seen for historical accuracy mixed with humor. I laughed several times and was impressed with how nice the theater itself was. We also loved the donation cow at the front that mooed when you put money in it.... a really nice touch. The museum... Watch and experience the history of Sioux city from the corn palace to modern industry. Tons of antique artifacts, a fantastic intro movie and a great dino fossil digging area made this a great way to enjoy Sioux City. And it's free too! We donated money to make sure it stays around.

This is a great museum I remember when it used tobe on Jackson Street but it's great that you can still have the old items and bring in some new ideas.
