About
On my tours I share the history of the battles and the soldiers with the aim that the torch of remembrance is passed on to the next generation. We will visit the battlefields of Operation Market Garden (and others) and on site we will talk about the history of what happened there, tell the stories of who fought there, and explain why this still matters today. My words are supported by maps, photos, aerial photographs, audio and video to give you the best possible experience. We will discuss the big picture, why the operation was launched, what the goals were and how they were to be achieved. Then we focus on what happened to the troops on the ground, what were their experiences, what decisions were made that caused the outcomes and we reflect on the human cost. By the end of the tour I hope to have inspired you to pass on what you have learned, that you too will help carry the torch and help keep the memories of their sacrifices alive. Put simply unless you have an experienced tour guide to walk you through the battle for Arnhem you will not get the most out of a visit there. I have read Anthony Beevors Arnhem twice but only once we trod the various fields, forests and streets for 7 hours did I fully understand it. Joris is an excellant guide and as a group of 6 we were all to a person delighted with our tour. Highly recommended.

This was our second tour with Joris, after our Arnhem tour last year me and my friends knew that we wanted to see all of the American aspects of the battle. If you have a passion and interest in these vital WW2 battles, this is the tour for you. Joris is an excellent guide with in depth knowledge of all aspects of the market garden operation. It is the small stories that stand out, about heroic acts by very normal people in the face of danger. You will be standing in the very locations that many brave people fought for our freedom. If you are planning to go and see any part of Market garden, I would unreservedly recommend The Battlefield explorer tours to anyone who loves WW2 history.

Thoroughly recommend Joris' guiding services. He tailored a fantastic trip for my family to visit sites connected with the actions of our grandfather's regiment during Operation Market Garden. He was friendly, knowledgable, and extremely well-prepared for our time together. The tour was perfectly paced, following a full itinerary that never felt rushed. Thank you Joris!

A wonderful experience and a great guide. He was able to do a custom tour due to some timing circumstances, but it gave us a good overview of the whole Market Garden operation. I would certainly recommend reading up on Market Garden, or at least watch A Bridge Too Far (and at least some sort of actual documentary) as the locations will have more meaning. I highly recommend this highly organized, well prepared, knowledgeable, and friendly guide! I will also compliment the way he maintains communication before the tour.

We took the Operation Market Garden overview tour from Eindhoven to Arnhem with Joris on May 8, 2024. We can't say enough about this great experience and the excellent hosting by Joris. He was amazingly prepared and informed and enthusiastic, and an excellent driver! We enjoyed and appreciated this tour so much and would enthusiastically recommend Battlefield Explorer Tours to anyone. AND we got introduced to pannekoeken, the wonderful Dutch pancake!

Thank you so much Joris! What a fantastic day we spent with you. From the initial enquiry through to our goodbyes at the end of the Tour, your service was absolutely faultless. Your mini van was extremely comfortable for the 3 of us and the video screen and battlefield maps at the back were a fabulous addition to us understand how the battles unfolded. The itinerary was well paced and really comprehensive. You brought the history to life with your image books and passionate story telling. The morning coffee and apple pie was a big winner with us, as was the lunch stop. We couldn't recommend you highly enough and can't wait to meet up again in the future to start another Battlefield adventure!

We booked a guided tour with Battlefield Explorer and Joris for our mutual interest in ww2. For 8 hours Joris guided us through the movements of Easy company in Holland. The guiding tour was detailed and personal. Joris had photos on posters, videos on TV and big maps in the back of his car which all made it very interactive. Joris drove us to all the points of interest in his comfortable van. One of the things we enjoyed the most was to hear all the many anecdotes of the men Joris had to share and sharing those anecdotes with a such enthusiasm . The 8 hours felt like 3 hours. We truly recommend the Battlefield Explorer and are already planning our next tour with Joris.

An extraordinary tour.
I was a tour leader for a group of military personnel. The result of the tour was fabulous. Everyone was delighted with Joris and his explanations on the spot.
Joris is very knowledgeable about the place and the history of Anrhem and Operation Market Garden.
His explanations were fabulous and the stories and details he told confirmed his knowledge of the history of the place.
Joris, in addition to being bilingual in English, which helped a lot, since the group was made up mostly of Americans, was always very attentive, pleasant, polite and very professional.
We will certainly rely on the services of The Battlefield Explorer when necessary. It was a tour of great value for our clients and for our company.

After many years of reading and studying Operation Market-Garden, I finally got to see where those dramatic events occurred and I chose Battlefield Explorer to help me do this. I give five stars to the Battlefield Explorer! Joris provided an exception staff ride. If you have interest in exploring Market- Garden, this day long tour is a must. Joris grew up with this battlefield in his backyard and he has a passion for the battlefield history here. His historical knowledge is exceptional. Joris has developed a tour which takes you to the key highlights, and at those places, he brings the past alive. Joris can tailor your tour to your knowledge level very easily. Joris has a great personality and you will make a new friend over the course of the day. I learned so much. I can’t thank Joris enough. Worth every penny and then some. I will be back again. Five stars for the Battlefield Explorer!

Our travel agency hired Joris to be our group guide for Operation Market Garden, the Battle of the Bulge, and Germany. We have been offering group tours for over 3 decades and Joris is at the top of our guide list. Our travelers' comments included; "excellent", "fantastic", and "the best". We couldn't agree more. He was a pleasure to work with, customized our trip specifically for our guests, and was beyond accommodating. Highest recommendations for this 5 plus star guide.
