About
On my tours I share the history of the battles and the soldiers with the aim that the torch of remembrance is passed on to the next generation. We will visit the battlefields of Operation Market Garden (and others) and on site we will talk about the history of what happened there, tell the stories of who fought there, and explain why this still matters today. My words are supported by maps, photos, aerial photographs, audio and video to give you the best possible experience. We will discuss the big picture, why the operation was launched, what the goals were and how they were to be achieved. Then we focus on what happened to the troops on the ground, what were their experiences, what decisions were made that caused the outcomes and we reflect on the human cost. By the end of the tour I hope to have inspired you to pass on what you have learned, that you too will help carry the torch and help keep the memories of their sacrifices alive. Let me take you to battlefields around Arnhem

We booked Joris Nieuwint for a full day visit to Arnhem and related Operation Market Garden sites. Joris is a fantastic guide with a passion for the subject and very detailed knowledge. He uses a very comfortable passenger van which is equipped with some excellent visual aids including relevant WW2 film clips and audio. His selection of maps and photographs to explain the battle is second to none. Joris tailored the itinerary to meet our specific needs and was very happy to make any last minute changes. He was great company, speaks impeccable English and was very punctual. We fully recommend that you follow the lunch suggestion venue that he will add into your visit, assuming you include the Airborne Museum in your plans.Payment ( via PayPal) was extremely easy for UK visitors and the trip represented good value for our group of 4. Altogether a first class experience.

Fantastic all-day Market Garden tour. I was staying in Amsterdam and took the train to Eindhoven, where Joris picked me up. We then spent the day visiting various Market Garden sites before ending in Arnhem, where I took the train back to Amsterdam. Stops included 101st Airborne drop zone, Son, Sint-Oedenrode, Koevering, Grave bridge over the Maas, a delightful lunch at a Dutch pancake house, Jonkerbos War Cemetery, Nijmegen Waal crossing site, Nijmegen road bridge, and the Arnhem bridge. Joris delivers a multi-media presentation with videos, artifacts, photographs, giant maps, and good company. As an Antietam battlefield guide, I always hope that my guests will walk away wanting to learn more. That is exactly how I left this tour, inspired to continue learning about the cataclysmic event of the 20th century and honoring those who served. It takes thousands of hours to accumulate the knowledge that Joris has and I highly recommend a tour with him. I hope to return one day.

Joris was the tour guide for a bus of 33 individuals that were participating in the National WWII Museum Battle of the Bulge 80th Anniversary Tour. This was an 8-day tour traveling all over the Ardennes from Elsenborn Ridge in the North to Diekirch and Luxembourg City to the south. At every stop, Jois had excellent presentations in which his preparation and enthusiasm for the subject of the stop shown through. He did an excellent job answering questions from the group and was more than generous with his time for individual questions.

A partial listing of significant stops included Krinkelt-Rocherath, Elsenborn Ridge, Wereth, Malmedy, Stavelot, La Gleize, Diekirch, the Bois Jacques and Foy, Luxembourg City, the Luxembourg American Cemetery and of course Bastogne.

I would highly recommend Joris as a tour guide for Battle of the Bulge sites.

Four friends and myself had booked the Bridge Too Far one day trip and having spent Saturday in two very different and exceptional museums, I was unsure how much more could be added to the narrative…I could not have been more overwhelmed!. Joris clearly has passion and enthusiasm but more than that has synthesised and articulated his research into an experience that breathes life and understanding into one of the periods more controversial and tragic operations. The sequencing and logical approach he applies to the recounting of the series of events together with appropriate application of multi media visual and audio supplements is quite superb!. His easy and likeable character makes the day an enjoyable one but can still carry gravitas where needed. Needless to say we were given far more of a tour and series of lectures and insights than we expected , imagined or indeed had paid for as we ran far over our deadline . but the quality of delivery never wavered…..I would highly recommend any enthusiast of history to spend some time in this chaps company.

Hells Highway, Easy Co and Market Garden in general has been a major interest of mine for many years. I have wanted to visit the area and trace the steps of Easy for a long time, and without a doubt the best way to do this is with Joris' Battlefield Explorer Tours.
The tours are run with precision, the routes well thought out and presented in a detailed yet compassionate way. As a well researched passionate and professional guide, Joris not only presents the locations well, but he makes you feel very at home, comfortable and welcomed.
The tour vehicle was of a high standard, very comfortable for the 8 hour day. Joris has a fantastic presentation system in the rear of the van. He has a 21" screen setup to play clips of the action or for historical significance. He also uses a series of large maps hung in the rear of the van to really get into the detail. I found this a fantastic element to the tour. There is nothing better than watching action on a screen and when you look around you can pinpoint where you are standing exactly in relation to the clips. Superb.
As a private tour guide myself for TV/Fliming locations in Northern Ireland (Game of Thrones Tours) i was both impressed and educated by Joris' passion and professionalism for his work and his guests.
I would recommend Battlefield Explorer Tours to anyone wanting to not only get to the locations, but to get inside the heads of the men who were there.
Stunning tour.

Joris was our "local guide" for the entire, eight day, WWII Museum, 80th Battle of the Bulge Memorial Tour from December 11-18, 2024. We could have had no one better!! Joris is extremely knowledgeable and well prepared, presents his material in the most complete, professional and understandable way, and at the same time does so with appropriate humor. My wife, daughter and I travel extensively, and have experienced literally hundreds of local guides over the years. We say without hesitation that Joris was our very best ever! Finally, Joris went above and beyond to personally uncover extremely, personally meaningful detailed information about my father, who was killed during the Battle of the Bulge when I was only two years old.

My husband and I have been on a pilgrimage to walk in Dad's footsteps during WW2--the places where he served from 1940-1946. We just finished an AMAZING 3-day personalized “Footsteps” tour of the Operation Market Garden campaign with Joris, the owner of “The Battlefield Explorer". He spent considerable time researching Dad's battalion so that he could personalize our tour. Joris did an exceptional job telling us about the role of the 80th AA. He also trekked with us into a cornfield to bring us to the location of Dad’s glider landing and into the woods to where two of the guns of Battery C had been placed! He has a comfortable high-tech van equipped with screen and hooks to hang large maps on which he shared video footage and used the maps to describe where we were located in terms of the scenes of battle. He also brought us to sights where we were able to compare the "then" photos with the "Now" photos. Our time together was not stale. Joris is a natural storyteller and was fun to spend time with.

I recently took 7 American friends to Europe for a visit to the Market Garden battlefields, the Hurtgen Forest battlefields, Aachen, and the Battle of the Bulge battlefields. After much research, I found Joris and retained him as our only guide for all of these sites. He traveled with us for 7 days. It was a great decision. Joris was well informed and enthusiastic. His visual aids also were excellent. And frankly the expanse of his knowledge was impressive and even though our group was very well read, he was much more informed. I would highly recommend Joris. I have participated in several military history tours and he was by far the best tour guide I have found. I would be delighted to discuss our experience with anyone considering his services. As a touring military sports team, we were very much interested in learning more and understanding the unique events that unfolded in Arnhem, 1944.

Joris, our tour guide and owner of 'The Battlefield Explorer Tours', did not disappoint. He provided a fantastic Battlefield Study covering the battle for Arnhem; from DZ landing through to British withdrawal/capture. His ability to cater for and mould his delivery to his audience was over and above any previous Battlefield Study's I have attended. Being an Artillery unit, the nuances and focus he brought to that area of the battle was fantastic and very much appreciated.

I would jump at the chance to attend another Battlefield Explorer Tour in the future. Further, I would recommend any group leader or organizing manager to book in with Joris when looking for this kind of activity!

I spent the day with Joris Nieuwent, he was very accommodating to my crazy schedule! Joris is fantastic, leaving the Eindhoven Train station we made our way up Hell’s Highway to the Zon Bridge, his VW van is very comfortable and the video theater with Overview maps takes you back in time to 17 September, 1944. The day was everything I’d hoped for in terms of bringing to life the realities and hardships our men in uniform, and the civilians, faced from Zon to Arnhem. Joris’ passion for his work makes a huge difference in your understanding and appreciation for Operation Market Garden!
