We made the trip to Pikes Peak to view the fall foliage. Normally it's very beautiful this time of year. However, because of the bad weather Iowa has been having, the foliage was quite disappointing. The lookout points, at the park, give you a good...More

Pikes point sits high on a bluff overlooking the Mississippi River. The views are magnificent. The park is a nice stop for those traveling the great river road - our stop was on a fall weekday and we had the place to ourselves. Enjoyed watching...More

We tent camped here during a weekend getaway. The RVs in the campground overwhelmed the few of us in tents, and some groups were noisier than I like, but overall it was a good overnight on a bluff above the Mississippi. Showers were clean. The...More

Holy stairs first of all! But totally worth it. Absolutley beautiful scenery when you walk the paths I just couldn't get over how pretty it all was. A little store has a few snacks and souvenirs, there are clean restrooms and a small playground. Definitely...More

Loved it here. We had a sunny day and before we even started we sat watching beautiful and fairly tame Hummingbirds at the park entrance...and there were loads of them! The view over the river was awesome, you could see for miles! The trails were...More

Most states have a color monitoring website you can check where they make a guess at when the color will develop. I don't know if Iowa has one, but you should look for it.

camping advice for Pikes Peak State Park - IA (2 Replies)
We're thinking of tent camping the first weekend of August and have never visited this park. Can anyone recommend a good campsite/general area within the park? The hiking looks good; I haven't found anyplace that seems to rent kayaks but is there anywhere to do that? THanks in advance!

In McGregor, Ia there not only is Spook Cave, but there is Pikes Peak State Park. Located at Pikes Peak is an amazing overlook of the Mississippi and Wisconsin Rivers. There is also 13 (+) miles of hiking. You can also stay in the park at the State run campgrounds! People come from all over the state and country for that matter, and end up coming to this area and commenting on the beauty of this place. I am sad that whoever it is that writes about places to visit in this area, omitted Pikes...More

Hi, I've camped at Pike's Peak (Iowa) a few times. Great place. It is the first, and less famous Peaks...founded by the same man. The camp was well maintained. The bathrooms were better than most I've seen. Kept very well. Real close to the gambling boat..I don't indulge, but the luncheon bar was great. There are many great places in northeastern Iowa.
