A gem!

Thoroughly enjoyed our visit here during a couple days exploring the Mason City/Clear Lake area. The museum has a very nice variety of collections displayed in a thoughtful and yet not too serious manner. Highlight for us was the extensive marionette collection, most donated by famous puppeteer Bill Baird, who was from Mason City. As a huge Sound of Music fan I was absolutely thrilled to see some of the marionettes from the movie’s famous lonely goatherd puppet show!

I was pleasantly surprised with this museum! Beautiful house and has a great view over the river! We enjoyed the paintings, puppets, and the Frank Lloyd Wright designs!

Right & our backyard but overlooked for years; a mistake!

Attended a free movie (w/popcorn) & discovered what a great place this is for young & old alike. Staff are very friendly & the environment really gets you a mood to explore. Beautiful classic woodwork, windows overlooking landscaped lawn & stream, unique collection of puppets, LOTS of art work, etc. The movie was an 'indie' winning several awards: focused on the 'driftless' region of NE Ia/SW Wis. Just one of many events they provide year around. Stop by!

Phenomenal small and accessible museum experience!

You won't be disappointed with your visit to the MacNider (free admission, donations are accepted). The collection includes something for everyone in a very inviting home-like atmosphere. The puppet/ marionette collection was fun and brought back many childhood memories. Spend some time meditating on the glassed-in porch overlooking the river. It was a rewarding experience, even in the dead of winter!

Very nice collection for a community of this size. We spent a nice hour touring the exhibits. Nice mix of media and styles. The Iowa Crafts display was a bonus. Had to explain the Bil Baird puppet display to my wife who is not from MC.

Thank you for your visit - and at the perfect time - the Iowa Crafts exhibit is fantastic this year! Not many people know about Bil Baird (& his Mason City connection) - but the puppets sure are impressive!

Don't miss this great art museum

The building itself is unique and beautiful. Inside there is a great museum for the rather small town of Mason City. It has several paintings by known painters. For those interested in puppets it also has a large collection of Bil Baird puppets and Baird is a native son. If you have any interest in art stop here. It's free but they appreciate a donation.

Aug 2019 • Couples
Located in an old mansion is this museum with every thing from Bill Baird puppets- he was from here- to a Calder stabile and a magnificent Benton painting that would not be out of place at any major art museum in the world.
An hour will cover it- do visit when in town for the architecture highlights

Largest collection of Bill Baird puppets.

The highlight of this museum tour was the collection of Bill Baird puppets, including the Lonely Goatherd puppets from The Sound of Music film. An easy walk from Historic Park Inn and Music Man Square.
