The main goal for this trip was to come to The Netherlands to see the tulips. We knew that by showing up in early May, we were at the tail end of the season, but it was what we had to work with. For tulips, Hortus Bulborum and the Keukenhof were the 2 key sites for us. They are different, serve different purposes, and each deserve a visit. I wouldn’t rank one over the other.
The Hortus Bulborum os totally volunteer-run and dedicated to preserving historical bulbs. Unlike the Keukenhof which is a manicured garden, the Horus Bulborum is rows and rows of different tulips from various eras with each square-ish patch clearly labeled with the flower name and year. You can walk up and down the rows to your heart’s content. Since we arrived late in the season this was as close as we got to walking in a tulip field.
There’s a little building on site where the volunteers hang out and you can get coffee, tea, and possibly a slice of apple pie. The apple pie was lovely. They have binders with photos of tulips and their names, there’s a map on the wall with info on I guess what you can call the migration of tulips—where certain ones came from? And a very small gift area.
We came here on Day 1 of our trip and went to the Keukenhof on day 2. After seeing both, my friend and I both agree that thatSeeing Hortus Bulborum first and the Keukenhof second is the correct or “ideal” order.
Recommend amount of time depends on the type of photographer you are. If you plan on taking photos of every type of flower out there, budget more time.
Oh, and again, because we were late in the season, there were fewer flowers than during peak season—like no daffodil field, but there was still enough to see and enjoy.
Thank you to all the dedicated volunteers who make this place possible!

Do not miss this flower fiesta in season around april may, the best you might see ever if you like tulip history! Shoot lots and lots of picture without those fancy Keukenhof tourists, this is much much better and not to miss on your Dutch sightseeing tour...

This is a relatively small attraction. In April the flowers are beautiful. If you are interested in the history of tulips and narcissus in Holland, this is a great place to go. Myriaads of different bulbs and flowers - some dating back hundreds of years.

Better than visiting Keukenhof which is quite expensive and very busy. Also bigger variety of tulips. Less formal than Keukenhof.

Possibly the best selection of flowering bulbs in a small area. Over 2500 types and species of tulips and 100s of daffodils and fritillaries. In all, over 4000 types of flowering bulbs and far more than I have ever seen in one place.
A superbly presented display of tulip and daffodil varieties and they show the history of the bulb industry in Holland and the glory of the blooms.
A really intense experience with so many colours and fragrances to enjoy. This is a place for people who love bulbs and colour shape and want to learn what every bulb looks like in peak condition!
The 70+ people working and volunteering to make this garden glow and grow are not always visible but when you meet them, they are a delight and very helpful and informative.
In all, a lovely place to be for a few peaceful hours and there is also a pretty place to have coffee and cakes and buy any of the delights you have seen.
When you leave with memories and probably a few purchases, then you will be able to enjoy the pleasures of growing bulbs that have been nurtured with so much love and attention.
A place to really enjoy for anybody that loves the pleasures of the garden and dreaming about the perfect bloom.

Great place to see many rare varieties of tulip. Some have been propagated for over 500 years, others are being saved from extinction. The volunteers are extremely knowledgeable and friendly. Must go.

You wont find anywhere in the world so many varieties of Tulips as in this small garden. It's overwelming to see all the colours, shapes and sizes. With also many Daffodils, Crocuses, Hyacinth's and Fritilaries it makes it look like a sea of flowers. Just open for only 6 weeks

I have never seen such a beautiful variety of flowers in bloom. It is well worth a visit to also learn the history of the cultivation. There were over 2000 varieties.

What a wonderful spring experience this is. To see flowering bulbs that have been around since 1899 and earlier and still blooming.

Near the large tulip fileds and near Alkmaar. Just make a quick stop and learn more about the history of the famous " bulbs " and the tulips in Holland. You can walk inbetween the flowers and find all informations on your favourite tulips and other spring flowers even the oldiest ones.
Very nice lay out, comprehensive, romantique area.Great place for pictures.
