Mahanay Bell Tower
Jun 2021
Stopped in for a visit after seeing the bell tower in an Iowa tourism book. Guide was very friendly and knowledgeable. We were able to hear the bells chime while we were there. We were also able to view the art that had been painted on some of the local business rooftops.

Unique experience!
Oct 2020
The view from the top of the Mahanay Bell Tower is breathtaking! The fall colors are at their peak and you can see it all from the top. I enjoyed hearing about the history of the Bell Tower. The staff is so helpful explaining additional experiences in Jefferson, so it is worth a trip to Jefferson. They have taken steps to keep visitors safe by wearing masks and providing masks for those who do not have one.

Warning—Avoid this place until COVID-19 is under control!
Sep 2020
While many people may not be traveling right now, some are opting for driving vacations or day trips to ease the extended isolation resulting from early COVID shelter-in-place orders. As someone in the latter category, I discovered the bell tower when looking over a map of the area near the high trestle bridge trail in central Iowa. After hiking the trail mid-week, we popped over to Jefferson, Iowa, to check-out the bell tower. MISTAKE!!! I am sure this is a nice place to visit under normal circumstances, but it is definitely NOT someplace to go until COVID is under control. We were greeted by a woman wearing a mask—a good sign, we thought— she took our money and then gave us some history of the tower. She loaded us on to the elevator and set it to go to the observation deck. When the doors opened we were greeted with about 15-people crammed in to a tiny space—most folks without masks. There was no way to social distance in the approximately 10’x10’ space, no hand sanitizer or wipes were available to clean the binoculars and it was obvious no effort was being made to limit the number of people on the observation deck (which is an enclosed room with windows so not open to the fresh air) nor are people required to wear masks.

While I don’t fall into a high-risk category for contracting the virus, I would prefer to avoid it, if possible—who intentionally goes out of their way to get sick? I love to travel but have severely curtailed/cancelled plans this year and adjusted my behavior to adhere to the limited advice provided by varying government factions. Choosing to stay in Air BNB houses and focusing on mainly outdoor activities has allowed us to travel and stay healthy. So, I was disappointed to find the group in charge of operating the Mahaney bell tower not following any responsible guidelines for admitting visitors to the tower. We immediately re-boarded the elevator and left—squeezing by another group of 5-people waiting to go up. I was never so glad to get out of a place!

Great view

I visited this site after reading about in in "Our Iowa" magazine. Great story on the benefactors and excellent view from the observation deck. Tony was very knowledgeable about the town and the tower. A copy of the magazine article is on display.

Surprise visit
Aug 2019 • Couples
We ventured into this beautiful town by chance. I was intrigued by this high tower located by the court house. I thought maybe there use to be a church on that spot but it turned out to be a donated by a local. Lynn the tour guide was very friendly and informative about the town. We happen to be there when tourist were slim so we had Lynn all to ourselves. Lynn recommended we walk around town to visit the local shops. We found some nice antiques and had some great food. Stop and visit Jefferson, we ill be back for sure!

These are pics of people enjoying the elevator ride to the enclosed observation deck to look out over the community of Jefferson and surrounding countryside. It is beautiful at all times of the year!

Worth the stop. The town is full of friendly people. From the top of the tower, they have painted murals on the rooftops to view.

Beautiful Tower and View
Sep 2018 • Couples
The attendant was super friendly and helpful. She took us up the elevator and explained the history of the tower and described the surrounding buildings and towns we could see. We heard the bells ring and I wished I knew how to play the piano. They have tables outside for a picnic lunch. I also went into the courthouse next door to see the murals, stained glass dome and architecture. Very nice visit to Jefferson.

This was a nice place to spend an hour. Our guide was very dynamic and interesting! She shared several stories and history of the tower, courthouse and town! It did have an elevator that took you to a glass enclosed viewing area. The view was great!

Must see if in the area

Great view of Jefferson, Iowa and farms from the top of the 140 foot tower. The bell tower has beautiful sounding chimes. Very clean. The guide is pleasant and informative. The three dollar fee is a bargain. This is a must see.
