Cedar Rock State Park is the home to the Frank Lloyd Wright designed Lowell and Agnes Walter Estate. The property is a complete and beautiful example of Frank Lloyd Wright's Usonian design meaning that Wright is as much the interior designer as he was the architect. Those that tour the home experience it almost as if the homeowners stepped out in 1950. The estate is comprised of four Wright designed structures which include the house, council fire, river pavilion, and formal entrance gate. Guided tours of the property depart the visitor center hourly from 10:00 am-3:00 pm Wednesday through Sunday's from late May to mid-October.

A true gem nestled in the Iowa farmland

I drive US 20 through Iowa frequently, and since my wife and I are long time fans of FLW architecture, I vowed to take her there sometime. Today, at the tail end of a 9 day road... read more

I drive US 20 through Iowa frequently, and since my wife and I are long time fans of FLW architecture, I vowed to take her there sometime. Today, at the tail end of a 9 day road trip, we found ourselves passing through Independence on our way home, so we stopped in. We are SO glad that we did! The... More

What a nice surprise! The tour was great! Very informative. Worth the drive to visit. Thanks also for your help with our dogs...while the dogs didn't go inside, they were nearby in the shade with our son.

It is a good place and the only place in Iowa to see an authentic Frank Lloyd Wright designed house. They have tours every hour and tour starts at the visitor center. You are taken in a tractor to the house which is about a 10 minute ride. Altogether the whole tour takes about an hour. However wish they gave... More

We were on our way cross country when we saw the signs on US20. We decided to take a chance, get off the beaten path and take in our very first example of FLWs work. The staff was EXTREMELY knowledgable and a wealth of information. The hour long tour was fantastic as you get to experience the house as it... More

Wonderful tour by very knowledgable guides that clearly are well educated about FLW and the house. The boat house is dreamy, the house as a summer house beautiful and so many ideas in the house that were so well planned that was so Frank Lloyd Wright.

This FLW gem is a work of art, one of Wright's signature homes (with the red tile to prove it) reflected in the cantilevered roof, the many design details and the beautiful integration of the house in this lovely setting. As non-Iowan Midwesterners we did have to go looking for the site, but it is worth it. The tour takes... More

If you love the architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright, then Cedar Rock is well worth a visit. The location seems a little remote, but don't let that stop you. The design is typical of other Wright Usonian homes, but we were stunned by what our guide called the Garden Room. Almost half of the house's square footage is this room,... More

Just a short drive off Highway 20, they offer free 1 hour tours every hour on the hour. What a gorgeous and unique home! The boat house affords great views of the river and you'll be hard-pressed to walk away not wishing you could live in this house.

This is my second visit to this home and I'm sure it won't be the last! The house is in excellent shape with original furnishings. The tour starts out with a ride to the house in a wagon. The tour takes about an hour. Tours leave every hour on the hour. The guides are very knowledgable and funny! The grounds... More

This is the 5th Wright estate that I've had the pleasure of visiting and again, another truly memorable experience. The folks and tour guides on site were very knowledgeable and quite accommodating, however, the best part was the exploring of the grounds themselves afterward. The views down at the boathouse and of the river were amazing. The land and of... More
