The Danish Windmill is a museum for all people interested in Denmark, Danish customs, Scandinavian traditions and, of course, windmills. Elk Horn’s Danish windmill is America’s only authentic working Danish windmill. The mill, originally built in Nørre Snede, Denmark in 1848 was brought to the United States in November, 1975 and rebuilt in Elk Horn, Iowa by community volunteers in 1976, America’s Bicentennial year.

We saw the signs for the Danish Windmill all along Interstate 80 from Des Moines. I looked forward to stopping and touring the little village...but unfortunately we arrived too late and everything was closed. The windmill blades apparently were being repaired at the time of...More

I stopped here on my trip between Des Moines and Omaha. I was disappointed that the windmills sails were in the process of being replaced as the others had rotted after almost forty years. The windmill itself is an original one brought over to the...More

The windmill's arms were down for repair so we couldn't get to see its full beauty but we were well-treated & got to see the small museum. Also on the grounds were the Morning Star Chapel & VikingHjem, a Viking smithy's home. We were glad...More

This is really a little bit of history + a gift shop. To the West side of parking lot is the Old Danish workshop. Anyone interested in wood and wood carvings may find this place fascinating.

Small museum but mostly a gift shop. The city is currently raising funds to fix the windmill (blades are missing) but it's still a great story.

We had driven by the windmill before we went to the Danish Museum. It was all torn apart and we figured there was no reason to stop. We found out from the woman at the museum that they were going to bring some people in...More

Well we went just for a stop. They have a great gift shop and selection of items. It's rather large in there and they have pretty much anything you might be looking for that's Dutch!

Windmill was broken. Waiting to replace the blades. The museum was closed. This was the second time we tried to visit the windmill and it was under repair both times.

Good compliment to the Danish Museum. Interesting how it was taken apart in Europe and sent to Elk Horn. Only about the bottom 1/3 is available to tour. The upper regions are blocked off.
