Spring is a great time to visit, the trees aren't full yet and hiding some of the great views in this park. Nice trout streams and plenty of places for kids to swim. There is also a cave in the park along with a natural spring. I haven't hiked any of the trails here but this park was recently listed... More

I grew up near Dundee. Had visited park a few times as teen. Recently visited with cousin from Manchester. A great gem for fall colors and nature

Such a beautiful place to hike along the lake. Reminded me of Massachusetts in someways, which makes me miss home this time of the year

This was our first visit to Backbone State Park, for a family wedding. The park grounds are beautiful with the historic limestone buildings, quiet lake and shade forest hiking trails. We rented a cabin and were very pleasantly surprised by how modern and clean it was. The playground and hiking trail near the cabins were perfect for entertaining our young... More

A difficult park to travel through, north park not connected to the south park. a tree blocked the trail, we had to walk up the hill to go around, Restrooms were smelly. We never found a ranger station, we were looking for a map,of trails to take along. The trails were rugged, and gave us a nice hike.

Beautiful and relaxing place to spend a day! Hiking trails are wonderful, well marked and lovely to hike. The river/stream is a great place to cool off. We took a walk down the stream following the little fish, saw a woodchuck out for an afternoon swim and many beautiful birds also enjoying the day. The buildings located within the park... More

great place for hiking, fishing, and bike riding. Go into Decorah and do the Trout run bike trail past trout hatchery and see the famous Decorah Eagles. We loved this park!

I've been going to this great State Park since I was a kid. Very close to Strawberry Point. It is very hilly and the one hiking trail takes you out on the top ridges of a bluff, the 'backbone'. There are many old shelters and restrooms built with limestone by the CCC. It is a large park with a few... More

The first State Park established in Iowa. What is there to do you ask: 1 - hike the Devil's Backbone and there hike the Devil's Staircase and the Devil's Oven 2 - wade in the stream literally for blocks in a cold, clear spring fed stream, trout fish, explore a cave, see Balancing Rock, swim at the beach, camp, hike...
