Great place, beyond up and coming - this is where you will find most of the young people to meet, hang, and find entertainment. The only thing missing in all of Des Moines is a trolley to get you to all the great places.

I recently spent a couple of nights in Des Moines and selected a hotel in East Village. The neighborhood was pretty quiet in these COVID days. I had selected mostly outdoor activities, and this location was very walkable to both the Pappajohn sculpture garden and the botanical gardens. There were several bike stations very close by and designated trails run through the East Village. I had hoped to visit a couple of art galleries if it felt ‘safe’. Only a couple were open, and frankly it was mass-merchandised decor so I wasn’t tempted to enter. That was disappointing. I’m avoiding restaurants, but I did notice that a few were open with outdoor seating.

For a tourist there's not much to see in Des Moines down town, but East Village is completely different. Here we found so many nice cafés, restaurants and shops. Further up hill there's the impressive Iowa State Capitol that you can visit for free. We didn't visit it yet but walked around the building and checked the monuments in the park next to it. From the hill it's a nice view over East Village and down town DSM.

We were in town for a bachelorette party and we walked around here for a little bit and it's such a cute area with lots of bars, restaurants, shopping, antique stores, etc. It has a young vibe to it and it's one of the cuter areas of Des Moines that I've gone to. Very walkable area with lots of things to do!

Had a great long weekend in the East Village. Enjoyed walking the avenues and checking out all the unique businesses and fun bars and restaurants. Felt absolutely safe at all hours, and enjoyed having access to free DART bus and close proxiimity to lots of interesting places. DesMoiines is really a very fun city to visit, and the East Village is a great place to stay.

This little neighborhood is filled with small and unique businesses that are locally owned. Our favorites are Raygun, All Spice, Gong Fu Tea, The Kitchen Collage and Jett and Monkey! So many fun stores and restaurants. Be sure to go on a Saturday during the summer....you can hit the Des Moines Farmers Market as well.

Various shops and eats available. Cute section of town, at the foot of the capitol grounds.
Clearly a trendy and happening place, with lots of apartments etc nearby.

Worth walking around and checking out the restaurants and the eclectic shops.
