Great sound!
Sep 2019
Your theater provides great sound, comfortable seats and a awesome environment!! We are not familiar with Des Moines so parking was hard for us to figure out!! Would of been nice if we would of been advised prior and then told that lots of the hospital parking was off limits!!

Wow is an understatement

We came to DesMoines from Milwaukee for a concert not knowing anything about this venue. Based on pics, we knew it was an older/vintage place. I sure wish we would have arrived earlier to take in all it's beauty. There's so much more than a concert/theater. Not only is the place stunning, but the people who worked there are very knowledgeable, friendly and helpful. Arrive early would be my suggestion to anyone coming here for an event.

Great show

Theater just happened to be in the neighborhood we were visiting from out of state. Gary Allan was performing so we timed our visit perfectly. Quaint theater that rocked the night.

Beautiful old theater!
Oct 2018 • Friends
Classy old theater, beautifully preserved. Box seating is very comfortable, and provides a great view of stage. Great acoustics. Lovely bits of history scattered throughout the lobby areas. Elevator access to the main and balcony floors, with adequate disabled parking spaces and access. Bathroom facilities were clean, though not that conveniently located for the ladies.

Love this venue and its uniqueness! But grumpy staff
May 2018 • Family
We love this amazing place and all its charm-balcony is a great place to view it all. The staff was rude in all my encounters this time in. It was a dance recital and they acted disdained by the crowd and by the dancers. No smiles or pleasantries what so ever. Disappointing at such a fun event.

Main floor or front of balcony offer best views; Love the old theater and house-like setting

I have seen many Nutcracker, ballet recitals and recently, Civic Music concerts at Hoyt Sherman. If you arrive early, the best parking is in the parking lots for the venue to the east of the theater. If that is looking full, there is also street parking on Woodland and up north on 15th and into the Sherman Hill neighborhood. You can enter the theater from the lower entry off the parking lot, which is also where the woman's bathroom is and walk up the inside stairs, or you can walk up the outside stairway to the upper, more grand entrance with three outside doors. The main floor seating has entrances off that main front entrance with the upper seating access from stairs up from there. The men's bathroom is up a level. At intermission, often the refreshments or merchandise will be available in the "house" part of the building to the west and you can view the wonderful artwork and paintings which belong to the house and to the old family which lived there in the Des Moines heyday of the 1880's and pre- world wars. Concerts at Hoyt Sherman are a real treat. It is not very large and so most seats seem intimate. I love the front, center and side seats of the main floor for a small concert and the front of the balcony "box" seats for a larger or louder concert. It's a lovely, graceful venue.

Fabulous venue
Mar 2018 • Couples
We received tickets to Robert Cray Band and just wow! The acoustics of the historic theater are truly amazing. We were seated on the lower level toward the rear, but the size of the place is quaint so I don’t think there could be a bad seat in the house. There was a cash bar offering wine and beer. During intermission, we browsed the art gallery that was part of the original home. The building is a beautifully restored part of Des Moines history. We will be back!

Great Concert Venue
Nov 2017 • Solo
Saw David Crosby. Loved the historical theatre. Acoustics were great. I remember touring this when I was in grade school in the 1960's. Had not been back since. Will happily go back to this venue for a concert. Really enjoyed an intimate setting.
