Description:

The internationally acclaimed Iowa State Fair is the single largest event...

The internationally acclaimed Iowa State Fair is the single largest event in the state of Iowa and one of the oldest and largest agricultural and industrial expositions in the country. Annually attracting more than a million people from all over the world, the Iowa State Fair in Des Moines is Iowa’s great celebration, a salute to the state’s best in agriculture, industry, entertainment and achievement. It is the true heartbeat of the Midwest, unequalled and unduplicated. The Iowa State Fair, the inspiration for the original novel “State Fair” by Iowan Phil Stong, three motion pictures and Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Broadway musical, is without a doubt the country’s most famous state fair. National media frequently rank the Fair as one of the top events in the country. In 2004, USA Weekend named the event the #2 choice for summer fun in America, topping New York City’s Times Square, Cedar Point Amusement Park Resort in Ohio and Disneyland in California. Midwest Living magazine named the Fair one of the “Top 30 Things Every Midwesterner Should Experience.” The Fair is also included in the New York Times best-selling travel book 1000 Places to See Before You Die and the subsequent travel book, 1,000 Places to See in the U.S.A. and Canada Before you Die. Join us August 7-17, 2014.

We loved the fair. Have been there 3 years in a row and we are driving from NJ. Free concerts were great. We also saw a couple of big ticket bands.. Got to love the butter cow. and 1500lb pumpkins. the best is seeing baby cow being born.

For starters, we were there at 10 AM on Saturday and all lots were full. Finding parking was an issue. Finally found an overflow lot. These were in a hilly area, long walk to the gates. They do have carts for elderly, handicapped, etc, but would be nice if the tractors ran out there. Overall, the fair was much better... More

We had heard a lot about the Iowa State Fair. Lots and lots of fried food (including twinkies). The exhibits were good. The cow made from butter was really something!

Good Times. Great Food. Too much to see and do in just one day. Buy advance tickets. Go after 5. Try camping there.

On a recent business trip, the Iowa State Fair was in progress. We spent the evening at the fair. Being from Ohio, I wanted to see if this fair was typical of the Ohio State Fair. I feel like the fairgrounds were a little smaller, but in general same fair type activities and attractions including the butter cow. In general,... More

If you are visiting Iowa in August or haven't attended the Fair in awhile, I recommend at least one visit. If you prefer times without crowds, going during the weekdays and starting early will help. The most crowds are on weekend days. We attend at least two days every year. The layout, food, exhibits and animal events are the same... More
