The internationally acclaimed Iowa State Fair is the single largest event...

The internationally acclaimed Iowa State Fair is the single largest event in the state of Iowa and one of the oldest and largest agricultural and industrial expositions in the country. Annually attracting more than a million people from all over the world, the Iowa State Fair in Des Moines is Iowa’s great celebration, a salute to the state’s best in agriculture, industry, entertainment and achievement. It is the true heartbeat of the Midwest, unequalled and unduplicated. The Iowa State Fair, the inspiration for the original novel “State Fair” by Iowan Phil Stong, three motion pictures and Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Broadway musical, is without a doubt the country’s most famous state fair. National media frequently rank the Fair as one of the top events in the country. In 2004, USA Weekend named the event the #2 choice for summer fun in America, topping New York City’s Times Square, Cedar Point Amusement Park Resort in Ohio and Disneyland in California. Midwest Living magazine named the Fair one of the “Top 30 Things Every Midwesterner Should Experience.” The Fair is also included in the New York Times best-selling travel book 1000 Places to See Before You Die and the subsequent travel book, 1,000 Places to See in the U.S.A. and Canada Before you Die. Join us August 7-17, 2014.

IOWA state fair was a lot of fun. Seems like mostly animals and food. Lots of things on sticks and Fried foods. Booths and Booths everywhere. Wish there was a map. Also wish the headliner concerts were less expensive.

More benches for people to sit on (never any empty ones so that tells you there is a need), more A;/C in bldgs. (expensive BUT would increase attendance on hot days because now everyone tries to jam into the Varied Ind's bldg.) and more transit around the grounds (the passenger trailer/wagons towed by tractors) (and per the questions below- there... Met friends here at the end of a road trip. A friend from Des Moines suggested we all go. What can I say? Multiple foods on sticks. Lots of fried goodness. More animals than you can count. Rides, wine, beer, baby animals, pig races....was a wonderful time. Tons of fun!

We came to Iowa during the State Fair, and spent a day there. Large fair, with lots of food and attractions. There is a free tram that takes you around the entire park, so that's good to get an overview. We spent 7 hours there, on a very hot day, and could have spent even more time seeing things. Exhibits,... More

Year after year the Iowa State Fair always has what you want to see each year and something new. This year our family shopped around at various vendors more than we had in previous years; it was a great way to see more and look for new things. We also enjoyed all the fair food and much more. Fair always... More

It's always fun to go to the Iowa State Fair and try the new foods they have each year! Elvis Duran & The Morning Show also make an appearance and take photos with fans at the KISS 95.1 booth.

The State Fair is a fantastic event. There is something for everyone somewhere on the grounds. From food to exhibits of all kinds there is something to do. Plan your trip around the crowds as parking can fill up , but one will find that the shuttles to and from are a great option.

We arrived a day early to take my daughter to school. We spent Sunday, the last day in 2016, at the Fair. We attend the Stock Show in Denver and enjoy the atmosphere. The Iowa State Fair is genuine American, genuine good food, great people watching, great venue to get back to basics of our lives in the States. We... More

My husband, son and I drove from the Twin Cities to attend a concert on Sunday August 14th. We got to the fairgrounds later than anticipated which significantly cut down on our time to visit the actual fair. Trying to find a way into the north parking lot was a hassle. There was a sign showing it full however a... More
