Three floors of art including pieces by Juan Miro, Picasso, Monet, Grant Wood and others. There is also a cafe but it isn’t currently open. Free.

Time well spent

We go to Des Moines every year for the Iowa State Fair. This year we decided to make a stop at the Des Moines Art Center. What a delightful museum! Our group ranged in age from 74 to 16 and we all throughly enjoyed it. The staff was very nice and helpful and the art was very contemporary and a little outside the box (which we loved). Admission is free (a goodwill offering is optional). Highly recommend visiting if you’re in the area.

thoroughly enjoyable, stunning architectural space, small but well curated collection

For me, a hidden and unexpected gem made all the more so by the fact that it's free. Contrary to a review below I found nothing offensive and enjoyed all galleries. As with all contemporary art, there will be a couple things that leave you cold (or wondering why we allow 'concept' to substitute for talent), but there are others full of wit an invention. There is 'traditional' art as well, some quite good (Hopper), some a decent representation (Wood, Picasso), and some 2nd rate - yes, a Monet can be second rate. But on the whole this is good experience, the guards cum docents have information to share and opinions to offer and I think you'd leave feeling the hour or two had been well spent. The kind of place I would return to if I lived in the area.

Chic small art museum with great architecture

Must-sees: the architecture--all three parts of it; Ed Hopper's Automat; some other paintings in that same room with Automat; some outdoor sculptures such as Animal Pyramid and the Three Cairns. It is an all-season destination in a great neighborhood.

World class collection- must see

Who expect to see a magnificent Giacometti walking man sculpture or a Bacon screaming pope painting in Iowa?
This museum would be at home in any large city of the world- do not miss it. Admission is free and the building itself is the work of 3 different world famous architects.
Allow at least 2 hours.

This is round the corner from my home. We moved to Iowa in early 2019 and never had I been here. The building is mesmorising, you have to go!

Not family friendly, & exclusive- look up subject matter of temporary displays before visiting.

Not an "inclusive" or educational place, as they claim. The main hall that you must journey through is covered in art pieces that graphically depict rape, dismemberment, & assault. Not a place for kids, those with any official religious convictions, or survivors of trauma. A shame, because some of the later pieces are actually worth a visit. Not a place that curates well for the general public, despite the free admission.

Small but great collection.

We visited as a family with 2 kids ages 5&9. They were given art “bingo” sheets to help get them engaged with the art and several works included nearby “kids”plaques with thought provoking questions to help introduce child to the gallery experience or to help them think more deeply about the art. It’s not a large museum but the collection is impressive and includes some very famous artists. They also bring in temp exhibits. It’s actually the perfect size for family visits, as the kids have fun but are not there long enough to get bored. FREE admission. Definitely worth a visit!!
