Definitely it was some shock to see Radin sculpture there and some painting of Matis. Warhol was more predictable as each US museum should have a piece of good US art. It is fee admission so you not risk anything just you expose yourself on good art.

Traveling through Des Moines Iowa, we took in this art museum. Most of the museum was not type of art that I prefer. My preference is for realism, but I did manage to find some that was interesting. I did find the gallery of Virginia Maier photos to be fascinating. How she managed to make ordinary everyday life scenes turn... More

Okay, I used to work there back in the 1980s. Loved it then, loved the collections, pretty much everything about it (except the Meier wing but more on that later). But 30 years have made this gem shine all the brighter. Collections: the museum has always owned truly important works, but the collections were spotty, incomplete. Wonderful contemporary works have... More

One of Des Moines' best kept secrets. While the museum is known for its visiting modern art exhibits, exceptional classical artists work abound. Both indoor and outdoor works make this nearly hidden gem, a park like setting in a beautiful, old oak woods. The adjacent rose garden is second to none in the region and is a must for your... More

I'd last been there over 50 years ago, when it was first build and had mostly modern art. I remember thinking at the time, "Why can't American art museums have more pictures?" Let's just say, what an improvement! The building is lovely, the docents are friendly and informative, and if you love art, you will feel right at home. I... More

I recently had the opportunity to return to the town of my birth which was more years ago than I care to remember. I was astounded to see the transformation that has taken place in Des Moines. One of the finest examples would be the Des Moines Art Center. The galleries are superb and the works on display were equally... More

It was planned when I was born. Three incredible architects are represented here over time : Meier, Pei & Saarinen The setting is rolling and in the woods. Of course, many artists are exhibited here during different periods of the year. I find these places to be very soothing, as I did at the Getty in Los Angeles. Go....you'll be... More

Coming from Chicago, and used to the the famous Art Institute I thought I would visit this "cute little museum" and see what they had. I was blown away! This is a top-notch art center with works that the greatest museums of the world would envy--Hopper, Rodin, O'Keefe (unfortunately on loan while I was there), etc. Great breadth, even though... Recently, I was back in Des Moines after my initial visit 25 years ago. Then, as now, the Des Moines Arts Center is a delight. What an impressive art collection, especially their wonderful installation pieces; that they allow so much room for large art pieces is really cool. And, if all the art and the beautiful setting weren't enough, it's... More
