About
Open to visitors since September 2009, the John and Mary Pappajohn Sculpture Park features artwork by 22 of the world's most celebrated artists. The 4.4 Acre park, located within a major crossroads of the urban grid, creates a pedestrian friendly entranceway to downtown Des Moines. This accessible setting, coupled with the skilled landscape design and caliber of the art, makes it unlike any other sculpture park in the United States. The Pappajohns' contribution of 28 works for the park is the most significant donation of artwork ever made to the Des Moines Art Center.

This was a great find! We'd had lunch at Americana across the street, and wanted to give the kids a chance to let off some steam while we settled the bill, especially as we had been driving all day (Des Moines was just a stop for us from Nebraska to Wisconsin).

We had seen the park across the street, so I took them over and it was really great - the kids loved running around, exploring the art pieces (they especially loved the color wheel and the man made of letters) and rolling down the hills.

It was my first time in Des Moines and I was impressed with how nice the city was.

I appreciated the open concept of the park and I liked the option to call in to get the audio tour, go on the website, or download the app as it was easy to get the information on the sculpture. The hard part was telling the kids some of them you could touch, some you couldn’t. Also, there was some sort of event going on as there were a lot of people coming dressed up to take pictures so it turned into alot of dodging picture sessions

We went on a splendid and sunny Saturday afternoon and took our time to listen to the explanation given on each sculpture. It is a great stroll enjoying the art and the scenery. The park is close to restaurants, pubs and breweries too. You might want to combine your visit with lunch, dinner, or happy hour. It is worth it.

On a very warm summer night, we enjoyed a stroll through the sculpture park. Each work of art was unique and well displayed so that we could enjoy it from all angles. We tried to do the audio tour, but were unable to get good reception on our phones. A brochure and map, would have been helpful and perhaps they were just out of them. The park itself is safe and well lit to make it easy to walk and view the art. We enjoyed the sights!

We had a little free time and wanted to experience this whimsical park. The hardest part of visiting this park was finding street parking. There is an online map that identifies all 31 sculptures. It was a fairly hot day so we didn't take time to listen to the 1 to 4 minute audio tour on each sculpture offered by dialing (515) 657-8264. However, we did wander around and enjoyed many of the sculptures.

One of the highlights of our day in Des Moines. The weather was nice, the sculpture collection was interesting,my kids got to run around, and the garden is surrounded by lively cafes and such. Great photo ops here. FREE.

Sculpture gardens usually have a unifying theme if some kind. This one is more of a hodge podge and your experience is really defined by your interests and tastes. Some pieces are interesting as works of art and conversation starters. Others are more of a "what the..." to say the least. Beauty is definitely in the eye of the beholder. But it's worth a 30 minute stop.

This park is worth a visit whether you have small kids or teens or just want to stop and walk your dog. It was so clean and we saw lots of people walking their dogs. We spent quite a while walking around and looking at all the interesting sculptures. We even saw a lady playing the piano across the road from the park.

If you only have time to see one thing in Des Moines, visit the downtown sculpture park. It is a community staple that never closes and never gets old. Surrounded by lunch and dinner options from $-$$$, local and chain coffee shops. Free to visit.

If you go through Des Moines and it is nice out, go to this park. It was a beautiful evening when we went. Lots of families enjoying the evening and checking out all of the beautiful sculptures within the park. I just wished we would have brought dinner so we could have stayed longer.
