We went on the guided tour of the Capitol on a Saturday. They have tours every hour on the half hour. There were about 7 other people with us. We were able to see the Senate, House and go up to the top of the dome. Well worth it. Very beautiful inside. And amazing to note that all walls are... More

This capital is very big and picturesque. The only thing like every capital is that there was not much to do. That's why I gave it 4 stars but if your in Des Moines or near it you should go see it.

Whilst the Capitol is breathtaking and you can do a self guided tour, I would recommend you do a free guided tour. You get more information about the history, design and the architecture of the building. Well worth a visit if you are going near Des Moines.

The whole building is lovely inside and out. The security guards were very funny and friendly and told us just where to go to see the law library. It's not very big, but it is absolutely beautiful and worth the trouble to visit.

Visiting all the state capitols is on my bucket list and this was number 41. This was a wow experience for the beauty, the architecture, history and the thoroughness of the guided tour. Our tour guide was passionate about her job and the building and as a result, we really enjoyed ourselves. I would highly recommend taking the guided tour.... More

Airplane broke down in Des Moines.... Had a day to spend visiting the highlights of Des Moines. We caught some of the top 10 things to see in Des Moines, and the Capitol was at the top of the list. It is very beautiful and stunningly laid out facility, and open access to all chambers of Govt was unparalleled! If... More

Wonderful classic building. Loaded with art, sculpture, marble, and well lit for photos. Go with a tour guide if you have the time. Very informative.

I was pleasantly surprised by Iowa's Capitol building. Set on a hill, this 19th century construction abounds with tributes to agriculture and liberties (namely through the military). The dome is impressive and sits atop tiers of paintings that represent farming and parts of Iowa's history (e.g. pioneers). The grounds of the Capitol are replete with flowers, shrubs, fountains and monuments.... More
