Self guided tours available but limited to just walk ways. Guided tours available: very informative, access to different rooms and climb many stairs in the dome. This capitol is a must see! Weekend tours do not include the library or main level of the house of representatives chamber. Ample amount of free parking. Outside grounds well manicured and historical monuments... More

What a stately, beautiful building that sits at the top of a hill with views for miles around. The grounds are well manicured and there is lots of monuments and sculptures as well as other museums within walking distance, as well as lots of restaurants! Des Moines is a great walking "city" if you are in moderate shape as there... More

After an absence of some fifty years, I had the opportunity to return to Des Moines for a visit. I was blown away by the transformation that is now Des Moines. I decided to do something that didn't seem cool to do when I was a kid...take a tour of the Capitol Building. This a very impressive structure with a... More

The Iowa State Capitol is a well kept and beautiful building that overlooks downtown Des Moines. There are guided tours of the Capitol and much information on its history. I highly recommend a visit if you have not been there before.

The walk-in free tours at the Capitol building was wonderful - the presenter was very knowledgeable about the history of the building as well as the state of Iowa. At the end we had the opportunity to visit the dome of the building which was a big bonus. Despite the hot weather outside, the dome was not very warm. We... More

My husband's 50th reunion weekend kicked off with a tour of the Iowa State Capital. We were fortunate to hear a presentation by two preservation architects who are doing restoration of the rooms in capital. It was fascinating to hear about the history of the rooms and the care that is taken to bring them back to the original design.... More

The grounds are immaculate with cannons, fountains and statues to see. Inside is filled with cool things like dolls from each governors wife and old battle flags. The staircase up to the top of the dome is a workout but worth it. The library is breathtaking with cool staircases and lots of old neat books. The chambers are a must... More

I personally LOVE capitol buildings and like to travel to see them in each state. The Iowa Capitol and it's beautiful golden dome is absolutely the most gorgeous I have seen! I love it! I've seen it many times and each time I think how beautiful it is!
