A short drive to view the scenic overlook. You can enjoy a view to the west as far your eye can see! Closer in you see the beautiful Loess hills, a small lake that you pass on way to the overlook. In addition, you can see the Missouri river! (The lake is also a picnic area.) The fall foliage was beautiful, but we have enjoyed in other seasons. There are trails to enjoy as well.
A nice getaway. :)

The reason for 4 stars rather than 5 is that there isn't much to do here. But what there is, is worth doing. Make your kids slow down for a few minutes while you read the historical placards. Ask them to imagine what it must have been like there, 200 years ago. Look across the river at the Omaha skyline and Eppley Field airport. It's not stimulating in the same way that an amusement park is, but it's thought-provoking. Thirty minutes will do it.

Love this location overlooking Eppley Airfield in Omaha and I-29.you are perched high on the bluffs overlooking all of downtown Omaha and the Missouri river. Nice hiking trails and historic information about the Lewis and Clark expedition.might be hard to find, but worth the effort!

Firstly, it is difficult to find and get to. When coming from 16th street and turning at the County jail you will go under a RR bridge then follow the road left and then right. Under another RR bridge. This road ends and you want to turn left away from town. You will be leaving CB and following a 2 lane country road. I haven't checked the exact mileage but a couple miles north there will be a sign on your left telling you to turn, this sign is small. First instinct will be this has to be wrong as it is an even smaller road and immediately going up a steep hill. BUT!, this is the way. The actual monument is nearly a mile up this road and there is a split to the left. You are now just 2-300 yards below it .
The parking area is paved with lots of room for cars. Several historic markers telling you about the area and what you are looking at.
We have sat up there just to watch planes going in and out of Epply, and to enjoy a train if your lucky going almost directly beneath you.
The view goes for miles and changes with the season and weather.
Also fun is to be on top as a storm is coming in from the west watching the clouds and eventually the lightning.
Be aware the will nearly always be blowing, it's the midwest and the wind blows.

I love to go up to the Lewis and Clark Monument whenever I'm back in my hometown, Council Bluffs. This is such a gorgeous view overlooking the Missouri River and, especially at night, seeing the lights of Omaha. It's also a great place to watch the planes fly in and out of Eppley Airfield. Just down the street is the historic "Black Angel." The whole town if full of great history and this is one of those places to go for the scenery and the history.

High on the bluffs north of Council Bluffs, you have good parking and disability-friendly area to learn about the story of Lewis and Clark. Plan on 20-30 minutes there unless you want to hike.

Great views of the Missouri River and the airport (Eppley) Fun to watch the planes taking off and landing. Be award of surroundings as this is an isolated park and not well patroled.

Aloha everyone, I went to Omaha for work this week and coincidentally just finished reading Stephen Ambrose's book on the Lewis & Clark expedition. So I was, admittedly, a little fired up to see some of the sites in the area referred to in the book. One of the interpretive sites is in Council Bluffs, named so after the fact that the explorers had one of, if not the first "council" with a Native American tribe living here along these bluffs above the Missouri River. The interpretive site is about 5 miles north of the town proper and you should use a GPS to find it. It's not hard, but can be a little confusing. The site offers a very nice and well-maintained monument and a wide open view of Omaha downtown, the river below, and the airport. (Plus there's a bathroom.) If you find yourself with a spare hour, drive up and take in the view. It is pleasant, and interesting, but history buffs be advised that the 'actual' meeting site is not recorded, given the shifts in the river's course over the centuries. This is an interpretive site that represents what Lewis & Clark experienced and marks a part of that journey. Still, a nice diversion and recommended if you have the time. If your schedule doesn't permit, you won't have missed any critical to your understanding of the expedition. Enjoy!

Another must do in Omaha! Best viewed when the sun is setting. The overlook is quite inspiring! The river and marsh below and the beautiful city of Omaha highlighted!
