Useful and Informative Stop
Aug 2021
Always fascinated by Lewis & Clark, I retraced most of their trail years ago but missed this park. A new cross-country drive gave the opportunity finally to see it. The visit was eye-opening, but not for the reasons you would think. Standing on the bluff and looking across the vast expanse before me, I was struck by what can only be described as the visual poverty of today's landscape: highways, railroad tracks and freight trains, a river dulled by decades of industrial use.

Contrast this with the park's outdoor storyboards recounting the abundance of animals: the herds of buffalo, deer, antelope, peacefully grazing in the vast green spaces whose life blood was the great river.

That said, I appreciated the informative signs with text, pictures and maps that gave a good sense of what USED to be here. I was especially happy to see the detailed map tracing the entire route in such a way as to impart a real understanding of their accomplishments as well as a basic idea of the many native peoples they encountered on their journey.

This is a depression-era park built with public monies. It's also a pleasant place to visit, with picnic tables and restrooms if you'd like to stay on a bit in the cool, wooded environment.

But it is more than a picnic place. If you take the time to read all the signs, you will learn a good deal about the two explorers, the native peoples who once lived here, and the historical significance of this place and time. Come for that. It is worth the trip.

Quick Overlook Spot

This is a nice Scenic Overlook/ Monument that has expansive westward views. The monument honors the expedition of Lewis & Clark and their historic meeting with the Otoe and Missouri Indians.

Free monument, quick stop, few trails and strollers and handicap-accessible!

Wide view of the Omaha metro

Nice spot to get wide north/south/west partial views of the Iowa and Nebraska stateline. Downtown Omaha, Eppley Field (airport), Big Lake, the Missouri River, and I-29 can all be seen well from this overlook. A few dirt trails are nearby if you wish to do some easy hiking. Sadly, the area up there has an abundance of litter that detracts from the overall appearance. Too bad some people have such a rude attitude and are not willing to dispose of their trash properly.

As far as the eye can see!

A short drive to view the scenic overlook. You can enjoy a view to the west as far your eye can see! Closer in you see the beautiful Loess hills, a small lake that you pass on way to the overlook. In addition, you can see the Missouri river! (The lake is also a picnic area.) The fall foliage was beautiful, but we have enjoyed in other seasons. There are trails to enjoy as well.
A nice getaway. :)

The Overlook is worthwhile!

I liked the view especially near the Lewis and Clark Monument and Scenic Overlook.

We could see one of the dam and the rugged mountains nearby. I would have missed this. It is attractive!

A must see!

great view but little else

This overlook does provide a great view of the surrounding area and there are several informational plaques that share some interesting information about the bluffs. There is a short walking trail however it was really overgrown after walking just a short distance. Not a lot here other than the view but its accessible enough and worth the trip up here
