Having never before stopped here, this was the third stop of my see Cedar Rapids Day today. I was impressed by the scope of the parking lot at first. Plenty of spots and many handicapped spots up front. You walk in. You are greeted by a delightful woman who answers your questions and directs you to either the museum itself... More

Read about this place and was surprised that there was such a rich, vital history of African Americans in Iowa, which today has only about 2% African American population. Found it very educational and worthwhile for everyone. The staff were friendly and welcoming and eager to answer questions. So glad that they rebuilt after the flood.

The museum is large, well put together, and provides a history of African Americans in Iowa before and after the Civil War, with some 21st century displays. Appropriate for children and adults.

Fortunate to return just as the museum was hosting its Grand Re-Opening of its much-expanded and artistically presented exhibit hall and collection. Something for everone from Oral Histories from Iowas of African descent to exhibits you can participate in, no matter your age/size.

This is an extraordinary museum for the little known and underappreciated contributions of African American arrival and achievements to Iowa. The curators have done a wonderful job in the permanent display(re-done a couple of times since the museum had opened) and the temporary exhibits-sometimes in cooperation with other AA museums ) are usually well done and always of interest to... A nice little museum that takes you on a walk through the history of African Americans in the US and particularly in the midwest.

I took some visiting students here, and we enjoyed it so much. It was my first time visiting the museum, but I would definitely go back. The first thing that struck me was the water line in the museum...it was above my head. They came back and rebuilt, and it's inspiring to see the work that they've put in to... More

Very interesting facts but it requires lots of reading. Kids would not enjoy this as there is very little hands on or interesting visual displays to draw their attention.

This is a very interesting museum. It is not super big but the entry fee is very reasonable and worth the trip to see this nice museum with interesting exhibits. Some of the exhibits are hands-on.

I stumbled across this museum while driving through Cedar Rapids. As you may have guessed, the museum chronicles the experience of Africans in their forced journey from the slave ships in African ports to Iowa. The museum then goes over the African-Iowan experience in certain industries and their efforts for equality into the 2000s. It also has a changing exhibit!... More
