I love castles...it is the first thing I am looking for in my trips...and this castle is amazing.
It gives nice views from above...climbing experience is great also but you will need a torch or mobile light to see in the stairs.
The keeper is very friendly old man and so informative, he walked me to the bus stop instead of just giving me directions.since i was the last visitor before closing.

It's a medieval quadrangular castle situated in a small town Mardakan (nor far from Baku).
There is nothing inside but castle itself is well-preserved. You can feel the spirit of medieval military castle that withstood attacks of khan Tokhtamysh at the end of 14th century. There are many holes in the ground where inhabitants of castle stored food. There is also extremely deep well. So, you can imagine how medieval inhabitants withstood attacks.
You can climb the tower although some steps are high and narrow. You'll see nice view from there. You can also climb castle walls.
There may be some difficulties with finding the castle as it's hidden between narrow streets. But you can ask locals who helps with pleasure.
We went to Mardakan namely to see the castle and we enjoyed our visit a lot !! We can surely recommened it for visiting, especially if you like medieval history and architecture !!

Situated in the town of Mardakan, not far from Baku. A beautifully preserved fortress and mosque. The caretaker can't speak English but enlisted some boys to translate for us and tell us about the fortress. Be aware, no safety features here and some hair-raising drops. We thoroughly enjoyed visiting this place. On our leaving, the caretaker presented us with some roses from his garden. His love for the building and the grounds were evident. I recommend!

It is a pity than the fortress was closed for renovation but even from outside it is an impressive place with a balance between Cristian and Arabic elements. If you are around it is worth the visit even if it is closed inside

We visited The Mardakan Castle (a.k.a Great Mardakan Fortress) The Ramana Castle (a.k.a Ramana Fortress) along with Oil City (the open oil fields that litter the area - all in about four hours by hiring a taxi via our hotel. They are all located about 30 minutes away from the downtown. What you see is the real Baku well off the bus tourist trail. This is located in the middle of suburbia, surrounded by old houses and a mosque (refer photos) Worth strolling around. The castle itself is kind of dilapidated but that added to the authenticity.

Interesting to a very, very short degree. Plan on spending less than an hour here and definitely watch your step. The grounds are full of huge holes that are uncovered and very deep. Could be quite dangerous. Beautiful old tower, however.

We felt it was worth the trip out from Baku to experience this site.
The fortress, whilst still in some original state does require some reconstruction.
We took the opportunity to climb to the top which is 5 tiers (76 steps) above ground level. Not an easy ascent, dark and short, narrow steps.
However, the view from the top was excellent.
At ground level, the empty wells were still evident - used to store food and water.
Two local residents appeared whilst we were there. One, we think was the caretaker and the other gentleman opened his souvenir shop, indicating that the wooden replicas of the fortress were crafted by him.
As always, this is one of those unexpected but memorable moments.Lovely people, appreciative of our visit - we just had to buy a souvenir!!!
We also visited the nearby Mosque - small, but interesting.
Not a "must see" site, but for us, a nice introduction to Azerbaijan.

Mardakan Castle lies on a hill from which you can see the Caspian Sea and the oil fields. It belonged to the ancient Absheron defense line. It was built between the 12th and 14th c. Here my sources do not agree.
It was a bit difficult to get up to the castle because of the narrow streets. The locals were very friendly.
The tower in the middle of the castle was the „flat“ of the people who lived there.
I think that the place might be interesting to experts of medieval castles.

Vidady is one of the caretakers, and he is very informative and friendly. I agree with other reviewers that this place is not preserved as well as European castles, but the people are very friendly which makes up for it. Definitely worth the trip when in Baku!
