Must See & You don't need an expensive Tour!

I was quite shocked at the $250/person price that most tours were asking for this UNESCO site - but a female friend and I did it on the cheap and without a guide - it was fabulous! We got a taxi for 40,000T round trip (though to be fair, a 4x4 would have been better). The driver waited 2 hours at the site parking lot as a very knowledgeable local guide took us around. You can't seem to get in without one of these local guides, so having your own won't help you avoid it. Though he didn't speak English and we had no Russian or Kazakh, he pointed to each petroglyph and we made signs and guesses until we understood what each one was. Read up before you go, have at least a little idea of what is represented, and this is a fantastic way to go! Maps/directions are hard to find and there is no signal for GPS help once out in the steppe - take the A2 out of Almaty headed for Bishkek. After about a hour (passing thru the towns of Kaskelen, Uzynagash, Samsi and Targap, look for the turn off on the right side for "Kopa". It's hard to see, so watch for it. After this turn off the road gets a lot worse (though there are drive around ditches to avoid the worst potholes) and it looks like you are headed nowhere. Keep going about 26km to Kopa, up over the bridge over the tracks and then a 45 min drive to the small Tamgaly/Tanbaly site. The museum is first and the site is 10 minutes past that.

Up close and personal with history

This was an amazing experience. It's not everyday that you have the chance to get up close and personal with history. I took a trip to Tamgaly Tas with my Kazakhstan History and Culture class at University in my study exchange semester. Our guide was really great and informative, and it was just so cool to see these old, old, very old petroglyphs up close. Most areas had no ropes or barriers to keep you a distance away from the rocks. Walking around the area was part of the amazing experience, just imagining people from ages ago drawing these images and living there.

I'd totally recommend a trip here!!! Bring water, sunblock, a hat, and some snacks!

Very interesting

Very interesting place.
The 3000 years old petroglyphs are well preserved and the guided tour is ideal to see them all. The guided tour lasts almost 2 hours.
I didn't really like the fact that the guide (in principle paid by the park to do this job, the tour is supposed to be free for tourists) asked us for money at the end when we got into the car.
In fact, we planned to give him a tip but because he requested it, we passed... (I know, not nice...)
Visit the site on the afternoon because the light will be better to see the petroglyphs.

Nice, but a long drive for a short view

It is an hour's drive from Kapchagay. Take the second exit (44.095211, 77.064987). This road is much better than the road from the earlier exit.
From the entrance (44.064266, 76.996056), it was a 300-meter walk to the petroglyphs, located against a rock wall and easily accessible.
A bit further, there were more petroglyphs, but these were less remarkable. In fact, you've seen it all after a few minutes and it's only recommended if you are specifically interested in petroglyphs or if you have plenty of time.
In early September on a Wednesday, there were several dozen tourists, some with a tent.

Be careful where you go!

If you want to see petroglyfs, be very careful where you go. Tamgaly Tas is NOT the same as Tamgaly! In Tamgaly Tas there are only a few petroglyfs and they are quite new. The UNESCO-site is Tamgaly and is in a different direction.

A Place of Eternal Mistery

Nobody in this place can have his/her soul and mind remained indifferent! Somebody is impressed by the few-thousands old Fire-altar inside the cave, somebody by ancient and medieval rock-engravings, somebody with the nature surroundings, including Ili river, and somebody with just an overall misterious and highly spiritual atmosphere of the place!

Its worth the trip...

Though a bit remote - get a proper car to maneuver the roads - it is well worth the journey. It is an amazing experience to see these "paintings" and the grave places... plus the journey there and back is worth the trip already.

The Staff at the site are great guides, always welcoming and knowledgeable. Bring time, as there is lots to see.

Don't forget to stock up on water and picnic, as there is hardly any supplies along the whole road from Almaty and Tamgaly Tas

Nice and wild

What is nice: Tamgaly is a petroglyph site. Some of the petroglyphs are several centuries old, like a beautiful image of Buddha. Some are older and reflect those times when flora and fauna were more abundant in Kazakhstan. Some are easily accessible and seen, others may require some time to be found. The site is on the bank of the river Ile, which is beautiful and surprisingly large for this dry area. If you go there in spring/early summer, you will see the blooming steppe and will be able to pick up mushrooms.
What is wild: There is no regular transportation to the site. The distance from Almaty is about 120 km. You have to have a car or rent a bus from a tourist company. The last 8 kilometers or so is an unpaved road. There are no restaurants or toilets. On any day of the week you can see several families picnicking. Unfortunately, they leave a lot of trash.

Nice camping by the river

At Tamgaly Tas we were camping by the river under lovely petroglyphs. The dirt road leading from the main road to the river Illy is ok, viable by non 4x4 vehicles as well.
Pay attention to snakes, we have seen one. Also, there are small annoying flies, so be sure you take a repelent with you.

Great place made sad by car owners

Friends and I went to TT for so many years to climb rocks, run and bike, and spend evenings at the campfire, and enjoy nature and history at their best. Unfortunately, ubiquity of cars made that heaven a dust bowl. Every crappy SUV-owner decided to test their ride on the delicate greenery of the hills around Tamgaly, and just about everybody thought it was a good place to dump the garbage they brought along. The local authorities reacted in a predictable manner, building an ugly iron gate, a football field and several concrete-enclosed dumps. So, come in winter or in rainy season, or in early spring. Avoiding crowds is your best bet to enjoy the place.
