The grounds, statuary and stations of the cross are tranquil and peaceful as you wander the grounds but once you enter the grotto you have stepped into another world. Be prepared to be chilly. The rooms maintain a cave like temperature year round. The workmanship that went into building this structure is amazing. Precious stones, minerals, etc. are placed in the walls with small spotlights on them. Anyone interested in geology would love this place. Anyone with a love of God and religion, nature, rocks/minerals, art work and sculptures would enjoy visiting.

If you are a Catholic or are at the very least appreciative of Religious beauty, a serene and contemplative walk and a bit of Polish culture, this Carmelite Shrine is wonderful to visit. I have been here numerous times and have always enjoyed my visits.
One suggestion: be sure to make one visit as an absolute when the grotto is open. It is not opened year round due to the cold weather. Otherwise, go for a mass, enjoy the Stations of the Cross and be happy!

As a Catholic, this is one of my favorite places to visit during Holy Week. On Holy Thursday, I "visit" churches in the evening. The chapel here is one of my stops that I like to visit to spend some quiet time. On Good Friday, I enjoy walking and praying the Stations of the Cross at the Monastery. Although they do have groups that pray the Stations of the Cross in the afternoon, I enjoy going in the morning by myself. The walk is tree-lined and very serene. They have an underground "tomb" where Jesus lies at rest. This is such a beautiful, spiritual place. I could not see going anywhere else during Holy Week to pray.

For the most part, this place would appeal to the spiritual Roman Catholics you may know. It has a great attraction to Chicago Polish Roman Catholics who make a pilgrimage once a year. It has some very pretty interesting things to see. You would not think of this place in the middle of a suburban town, but there you are.

While driving into Munster we saw the big shrine and had to stop. This was a beautiful place to honor our religious figures in my Catholic faith. Even non Catholic will enjoy the beauty.
