About
There is something magical about the Dalsland canal and it is not only the surrounding stunningly beautiful nature that will enthrall you. The most astonishing thing is that although it takes you between Vänern and the mysterious Lake Stora Lee in northern Dalsland the canal itself is only a few kilometers long. The secret lies in Dalsland’s unusual topography. The last ice age created many long deep rift lakes and made Dalsland Sweden’s most lake-rich landscape. Making good use of these, only 12 km of the 250 km stretch of the canal system had to be dug or dynamited to link up these deep, clear lakes to a single waterway.

Dalsland kanal is described as one of the Europe's most beautiful waterways. It's a 250 km long lake-system with flood gates, which are called "slusen". The gates are manually opened and closed, the separate tanks fill with water to a certain level so the boats can pass through. It's a life-time experience to watch. You can visit the kanal at several places, like Lennartfors, Håverud, Töcksfors, etc. If you are interested to see the oldest version of these, visit Sootkanalen. Thanks to the authority for such an efficient maintenance keeping the historical aspects unmodified.

The ultimate way to travel throug an ulitimately beautiful part of Swedish nature, with small towns and clever solutions to engineering problems. The Canal is also an interesting part of the industrial history of this region.

Yes, in the interior of Sweden you will find a Kanal that is old and interesting and still working although it was built between 1864-1868. Along side of it is a restaurant and a fish processing plant where you can buy the best smoked lox you will ever taste. In the summer and early fall a lovely antique store is open and filled to the brim with interesting items. Now a roadway is above it so you can watch the kanal function. If you like there are cottages for rent. If you wish to travel this waterway expect it to take 4-7 days. Rent a houseboat or canoe or kayak. Camping sites exist for overnight stays along the way.

To go by boat along the canal is un unforgettable trip. You see the landscape slowly along the way. And going through the locks is quite exciting.

We spent the day driving from Bengtsfors to Håverud and enjoyed several stops by the canal along the way. Bengtsfors has a somewhat unusual Japanese inspired garden which is dedicated to the environmental cleanup that took place after mercury deposits were found in the area (courtesy of a 19th century chemical plant). A miniature lock system display enabled our 8 year old to gain hands on experience of how a canal operates.

Next stop was Billingsfors where we turned in to a nature reserve on the right of the main road. We were able to park in two small car parks which gave access to short walks that took in several of the locks and views of some rapids. We were able to see the sightseeing boat to Håverud early on in her cruise. We then went back up the main road and turned right, past the wood mill, to access the Ösen nature reserve. From the car park there was a 1.8km woodland loop walk that included access to a small beach where we took a swim. The water was shallow for quite some way so it was safe for small children.

We carried on to Håverud for lunch at the smokery. Portions were generous and they gave our son some extra when the kids meal wasn't quite big enough (he will eat half a salmon given the chance). We got to see the daytrip boat arrive through the locks as well as the train overhead. We then took a walk over the viaduct and up the hill to a viewing point. We finished at the surprisingly large and well maintained canal museum (40kr for adults, kids free). Information guides were available in other languages. The tourist information centre included a glass blowing display and a high quality souvenir shop.

We could have easily spent a other day in the area as there were other activities such as canoe rental and a farm offering childrens activites.

2018 happens to be the 150th anniversary of the opening of the canal in 1868. It was built to transport timber and iron ore between Stora Le and Kopmannebro. But ten years later a railway was built, and barge traffic gradually disappeared. It’s an engineering marvel with 31 locks lifting boats 67 meters over 254 km. The entire length can be traversed in a private boat through beautiful Swedish scenery. Our trip was five hours long between Haverud and Bengtsfor on the M/S Storholmen and included a delicious smoked salmon lunch. You go one way by boat and return by train. A highlight of the trip was the boat traveling on a viaduct bridge high about some rapids.

We went to Haverud especially to have a look at the steel aquaduct in combination with the train tracks and the sluices. It is impressive to see how everything has been constructed (all in the 19th century!) and watch a boat go through the sluices onto the bridge.

A tour through or along the canal is a great way to learn about swedish history from 1868 and into the 20th century. You are also right in the middle of the amazing swedish nature.
