About
The 1000 Steps is probably Melbourne’s most popular bushwalk. Officially the Kokoda Track Memorial Walk, walkers love the challenge of the steep trail, locals appreciate the convenience and tourists just want a picture of a gorgeous rainforest walk. But to truly appreciate this unique place, you need to visit when it’s quiet. The Kokoda Track Memorial Walk (incorporating the 1000 Steps) departs from Ferntree Gully Picnic Ground, winding up a steep hill along a creek through lush rainforest, before emerging into a clearing where you can enjoy great views of Melbourne through the trees. Complete the loop by taking the Lyrebird Track back to the carpark. The path is steep and beautiful, which makes it attractive to fitness walkers and tourists however please leave your dog at home, as this walk is not for your pets. Dogs are not allowed at the 1,000 Steps.

We came here for hiking but due to closure of some of the hiking place, we went for the lyrebird track instead of Kokoda track 1000 steps memorial walk. It was drizzling and we hiked up under the rain. Fresh air and heard lyrebird welcoming us with their lovely voice! A memorable hike for 750m distance before giving up! Great work up…!

Kokoda 1000 steps is a place for enjoying nature with family/ friends while burning your calories. Must come in the early morning, or you can’t get a parking spot.
There’s a cafe and playground too.

My wife and I walked up this trail during our recent holiday in Mount Dandenong where we stayed overnight in a luxurious holiday cottage.

The weather was cool and it was easy walking the trail. The views were scenic. We will visit again sometime in future.

Yes it helps if you are a little fit, but hey even if you are not this is a must. So informative along this walk with lots of rest stops. There is a lovely view and water at the top. You can do the loop track or go back the way you came. Lots of free parking, picnic areas, BBQ, cage, playground and toilets. You can spend all day here

The 1000 steps in the Dandenongs gets really busy almost everyday of the year no matter what the weather conditions. Try going really early (just after sunrise) or try one of the other tracks. My favourite is the Bellevue track. You can get to it from the very bottom of the car park. It is a longer more sustained walk, about 1 1/2 hrs from the car park to One tree hill picnic ground and back. If you are looking for a real challenge, take the Bellevue track to the water tank, then stony rise walk and then the View track. This is a real killer. Going this way its is a 2 hr round trip.

The day before we did this walk I was at a shopping centre with my 13 year old daughter. As we were eating for her friend to arrive, I said lets count how many smiles we see in the next ten minutes. Sales were on and there we hundred of people clutching their newly acquired bargains. In ten minutes we saw two people smile. The day we did the Kokoda Trail Memorial Walk it was hot and humid, kids as young as four were stepping their way to the top and I reckon every second person was grinning. It wasn't easy but seeing so many people deciding to walk up a hill instead of hunting bargain made me (and my daughter) smile.

if you are living in city and would like to get a short term walk with some hills, here is your best choice! dont be scared of the number of steps. 1000 steps are very easy for beginners as the stairs are built in very good and easy to step up. The view is fab. on forest with a lot of tall trees. however, you cannot see any city views on the top! we tried to walk along view track and outlook track. Dont be trapped with "view" and "outlook". nothing can see in the tracks! View track is very steepy and stoney rise is very hard to walk up as of stones! but it makes you feel the real hiking. A lot of hiking fans walk here so no worry about the safe !

Finally went to the 1000 steps. I live the other side of city. It was a good day out. I took the train which was easy. Just ask google for directions.
There werent any spectacular views unfortunately but it was nice amongst the trees and mountains.
After the top of the steps i kept walking for over sn hour which i found more enjoyable.
Next time i might try running the steps 😉

I highly recommend this walk.Beautiful bush scenery and Very challenging.
It took my husband and i approximately 30 minutes up from the carpark area and then we leisurely walked down.
I have to say we are reasonably fit and 54 yrs old and found the steep steps quite a challenge .
The bush and birdlife and peace are a lovely change away from Melbourne city.
