Our 3-year old enjoyed the zoo. It was a decent zoo, but with it being built on a dune the inclines could be a little tiring on a young child. I liked the variety of animals. I also enjoyed the very descriptive placards outside of most enclosures with information about the animal and their conservation status. The parking lot was shared with the beach, so if you planned to stay for the whole the $15 parking fee wouldn’t be horrible. Plan accordingly in order to utilize the full cost of parking here.

We had a great time at this zoo! I think we were here for a couple hours. I wasn't sure what to expect because we have been to many zoos this summer. Huge zoos like the Indy Zoo and Columbus Zoo. But this was a cute zoo and there was more to it than I expected. Beware the cafe is closed. We went right at lunchtime and we had to leave to go eat lunch and then come back.

Parking is expensive ($15) because it is shared with the beach. I wish I had known it was shared with the beach. We would have planned to go to the beach after the zoo. But we basically stopped here on our way back home just as a half-day activity. The observation tower was our favorite part of the zoo. I saw some reviews say it was closed, so I am so happy it was open when we went. It has spectacular views!

Next time we go we will be prepared to go to the beach after the zoo so we can get our money's worth for parking. There is also a small playground near the parking lot as a part of Washington Park. You could make a whole day out of this if you go to the zoo and beach.

We were staying the week in New Buffalo, MI & looking for fun things to do nearby with kids. This Zoo was perfect! It’s small so it didn’t exhaust the kids & all the animals are so close it kept the kid’s interest. They had a tiger, lions & a grizzly bear which were amazing to see so close up! The Zoo prices were reasonable ($28 for our family of 4 w/ 2 kids). The parking area is shared with the beach so the parking at $15/car seemed a bit steep, but we would do it again in a heartbeat. The cafe prices were reasonable ($1 box of popcorn, $2.25 pretzel w/ cheese). The Zoo has amazing views of Lake Michigan as it’s built into a hill next to the beach. There is also an observation tower you can climb. It’s steep, but our 4 & 7yo made it just fine. There is a ton of shade so if the sun started to get warm you could easily find shade. Plus there was usually a breeze off the lake. We will recommend this Zoo to anyone in the area! We stayed about 2.5 hours.

We were looking for a family activity to fill a couple of hours and this fit the bill. The positives are that they have a nice variety of animals, the inside exhibits are nice (neat and smell ok even), and there is a great view of lake Michigan at one point. A few negatives: it is a very confusing zoo to get around even with a map... it does not exactly make a nice loop and it could use a lot more signage. It is built into a steep hill--so there were times where it wasn't clear if it made sense to walk up hill (or steps) and several times things were closed and not labeled as closed until you walked there (like the observation tower). Along with the steep includes, several stair areas were in need of repair and there weren't many handrails around (things to keep in mind for accessibility). With that said, the price was very affordable for the couple hours (I think it was $8 for adult and $6 for kids)... and it's also near the beach (that we did not go to).... it was a nice day overall.

This zoo was so cool! We stumbled upon it when we were looking for attractions in the area. This came up so we decided to check it out. It was only $8 for people over 12 so we thought why not. I was not expecting much but it turned out to be a cool place. They have several different areas so it keeps things exciting. We've got a big zoo down here in the Indy area but I was surprised that this zoo had a lot of things that I had not seen at the Indy zoo. Some things were still closed due to COVID but it was still a good time. My favorite part was this one spot we came across where you look down and you can see most of the zoo and then if you look out you can see the rest of Washington Park and Lake Michigan. The view was absolutely stunning!

I liked seeing all the wild critters especially the ones from Africa like the lions and zebras but I felt the enclosures were a little too small. I did like that the peacocks could walk around freely that was cool. The wolves were incredible I also liked getting up close and personal with the Emus, they are cute

My boyfriend was working in Michigan and I came to visit. We took off one afternoon and headed to Michigan City. We searched places to see and go. We came across the zoo and decided to check it out. It is a classic gem. We enjoyed walking around the unique zoo. The enclosures are so close and you get to see the animals up close. The place is really showing its age. However, I wishes they would make the repairs as there are some stair cases, walk ways , and enclosures that are shut down that would be very cool if open.

Must See - the tower: built in the 30's and restored a few times after was an awesome way to see the lake and park. The Bird area: buy the sticks in the gift shop for $1 and feed the birds. They will land on you and it was a great experience even for an adult. I felt like a kid again.

Over all I definitely recommend a stop. It's only $6.50 for an adult. You can't get that close to the animals in a big zoo and it's like taking a step back in time!! Go see!

This is a great little zoo, many attractions, I was pleasantly surprised. We live in the area so this was a great, short trip with the grandkids. Eagles, Bears, White Tigers, petting zoo even an enclosed aviary where you can feed parakeets. If you live further away, make a day of it, after the zoo walk on the beach, have lunch in Valparaiso, Michigan City or Chesterton, visit the little towns or shop at the outlet mall in Michigan City.

For being a smaller zoo in kind of an odd location, we were very pleasantly surprised. We live in Illinois and it was definitely worth the 45 minute trip. You can tell that the infrastructure of this zoo is older but they have done a great job of creating, maintaining and updating the animal habitats. They have a wide variety of larger and smaller animals to see and enjoy. The low entry fee is worth every penny and of course supports the mission of the zoo. If you plan a day trip, you could visit the zoo, rest at the beach and then shop at the outlet mall. Would definitely recommend this one!

This is a great place to visit for the animals and also for the unique location and some of the buildings that were built during the Depression. Don't miss the tower. It has the best views in the area...definitely worth the easy and safe climb to the top.
