Lovely well maintained path along the river with lots of benches along the way to rest or enjoy the peaceful view. Many pretty trees and flowers too.

This is a great pathway along the Ohio river with many benches to sit and enjoy the view. Twice on our trip we grabbed takeout and enjoyed a dinner and later a breakfast while watching the river

Madison has done a great job along the river. It's a beautiful walk with plenty of places to stop, sit and enjoy the scenery. Plenty of areas in the shade great on a hot day.

It was a beautiful fall day to walk along the Ohio River. The sidewalk goes for a long way so if you wanted you could spend several hours here. Bring a picnic and stop along the way. There are plenty of place to sit and take in the beauty of the area. There is also a large playground nearby if you have children with you.

We walked along this path (really it's a sidewalk) from about Mulberry Street to Vine Street. It was perfectly level & well taken care of. It was a great way to enjoy the river views, with lots of benches. Some shade trees.
There was also a restaurant on a boat you could get there from a gangplank. The public pool off Elm & Vaughn has been there since the 1930s & has a famous shell design.
A nice walk!

This trail leads up a very long, steep (paved) path to the hilltop well above the city of Madison. It was a very hot, humid, day and we turned around and went back down about half way up the trail. It is a beautiful area and the scenery was great. It was just too hot to fully enjoy.

I would rate this trail awesome if it were not for the steep climb! Some of it is level ground, but if you want to see the wild life, plants, trees, you HAVE to go up the steep hilly part. The level parts are mostly right in downtown Madison and not much to see in this area. There is a really cool old bridge right before the incline starts....and the wildlife is abundant. Every time I've walked this trail I've seen deer, very up close...and the plant life is pretty. I didn't run across too many people on this trail...I'm guessing it's because a lot of people can't handle the climb. The memorial to one of our fallen police officers is sobering to see...and is a nice stopping place to take a breather and reflect. Just be prepared to go UP hill and then go back DOWN the hill...which is just as unpleasant...I assure you.

Most of this trail is in the shade but there are some sunny parts. It is mainly paved and part of it is quite steep. The view is pretty.

Madison should be very proud of the Heritage Trail. You can start out on the river of a little further up, but its a great surface to walk on. It's great for dog walking, too. Additionally, if you are into geocaching, there are all kinds of caches along the trail. Another reviewer mentioned the distance as 1.5 miles. You can easily add to this at the top of the trail by walking around the roads of the hospital and women's prison. The views of the Ohio River Valley are phenomenal! Also, you might be interested in doing a little exploring on the "Cat Steps" that are above the Heritage Trail, but connect to it.
