Russo Falls forms the border between Rwanda and Tanzania. Not a particularly tall falls, can't be mentioned in the same breathe as Victoria or Niagara, but it's voluminous rush of water is worth seeing. Journalists reported standing on the bridge in 1994 and watching bloated bodies of genocide victims tumbling over the waterfall at the rate of one or two per minute.

Rusumo falls was very promising on the rwandan website of tourism. But instead of making it a touristic attraction, they made it a ghost town "under construction". Since early this year (2013) they're building a new bridge just next to the old one. When we stood on the bridge we could imagine why they think a new one is necessary when we shaked like hell due to a truck riding over. All big vehicles coming from Tanzania has to cross that little bridge, so it's very dangerous to stand a a tourist and watch the falls. Though, they're very beautiful and I'm happy I saw them. They have a grand history with Belgium (they were hiding all armors under these falls in late 1930 when Belgium took over Rwanda from Germany) and has some cruel stories from 1994, when two bodies a minutes splashed from above into the water. They were the fugitives from the genocide whom wanted to cross te border to Tanzania.
Also, the water has a strange smell and looks very brown, but it really fits in the bigger picture. Nature of Rusumo is in some way beautiful, but the people of Rusumo has lost control of waist management...

I read another review that mentioned that the construction on the bridge made the trip less enjoyable. I am happy to report that the construction is complete. There is now a new bridge for traffic, and the old bridge still stands.

Simply hand over your passport to the Rwandan border guard and walk out onto the bridge. From the new bridge there is a lovely view of the valley, however you cannot see the falls as it is blocked by the old bridge. If you walk back to the Rwandan side there is a hole in the fence. just walk through there (the border guards don't mind, and seemed to encourage it), and make a left onto the old bridge, from here you have a unobstructed view of the falls, and its muddy water. The old bridge is closed to traffic so you can walk around on it with no fear of being runover by heavy truck traffic.

Walk down to the old bridge and border crossing and check out the falls. It's worth it and also worth seeing the genocide memorail on the Rwanda side. We didn't leave the country, so we'll have to check it out from the TZ side another time.
