Over 30? You'll be ignored, so don't bother
Feb 2020 • Couples
We believed the reviews that day Alley Cat Lounge is an unpretentious bar that's welcoming to everyone in Broad Ripple ... but in fact, that's b.s. We were ignored and never served, at least by the staff on Feb. 15, 2020. That made my partner and I feel like crap, and it ruined our evening. It's not ok to refuse service because of skin color, or ability/ disability ... why is it ok to refuse service because of age? That sucks.

Tasty Pizza, Great environment!
May 2018 • Friends
After I arrived to the airport a friend brought my wife and me to this place and it was good even though it was a Monday we ordered a couple of drinks and a pizza, very tasty meat lovers.

It's a cool place they have billiards and they eventually have stand up comedy show.

Nice place, come and visit.

Sneaky...
Mar 2017
This was my third bar of the night, so I trustingly followed my friends (who are locals) down a series of alleys and passageways to this haunt. Unique, but friendly enough crowd. I am giving it an average rating because the bar is still a cash bar...otherwise, it was very good.

Whispering Bartenders
Sep 2015 • Solo
I came in alone one night and instead of the hired help talking to me, they chatted loudly to each other, about other people, clearly enjoying the banter while ignoring me. The guy poured me a very weak drink - not a full shot. On my second round, a new bartender appeared and she whispered secrets to her cow-worker (yeah) throughout my second cocktail. Not friendly barkeep nor attractive. Everyone working there was fat and much nicer to each other than the few customers being ignored at the bar. I will not return to this dump and would not suggest this to anyone.

Dive for the sake of a dive
As an Indy native, I'm well aware of the Alley Cat. I've had more than a few late nights ending up here.

Let's be honest people, the Alley Cat Lounge is a dive. There are plenty of dive bars around any city of a similar size. What sets this apart is that it's a dive in the midst of an area filled with more trendy or college-type bars.

Given that I prefer this type of bar to a meat market with someone selling beakers of blue liquor, it's not an attraction per se. It's a dive for the sake of a dive only known because of the area and no other real reason.

Does it have so-so food? Yes. PBR? Yes. Sticky floors? You bet... Dive appropriate bathrooms? What do you think?

There are better places to get your food or drink on and it's not a place I consider to be an attraction. If you're stuck in Broad Ripple, it's at the bottom of the 4-5 places I'd go - I just don't go out in Ripple anymore as there are places I'd rather go nearby or downtown.

the greatest
I'm leaving for Seattle in August and at the risk of sounding like an alcoholic, I will miss the Alley Cat most.

Broad Ripple itself is bursting with activities, but the Alley Cat draws an ecclectic group of people. They have strong drinks for cheap. Their food is the BEST, bar none. $10 steak nights every Thursday have kept me alive for years. They treat you well, and there's free pool on Sundays!!

If you're in in Indy and have never been, you need to go. There's a reason it's been around for so long.

The Dive Bar of Indianapolis
I don't go to the Alley Cat too much anymore, however, this is one of the most legendary joints in town.

Maxim magazine deemed it the cities best Dive Bar!

Located, yes, in an alley, in the height of Broad Ripple - one of the biggest bar and restaurant areas in the city - it's been there for years, and has been where many people have spend their 21st birthdays.

You get a huge mix - from yuppies to punk rockers, goths and jocks, rock stars and hippies - something for everyone. A lot of regulars, and always new faces - this is the kind of bar people like Bob Dylan has written songs about.

The Alley Cat is famous for a few things:

-Strongest drinks in town. Like your Jack Daniels? Well you'll love the cat. Cheap as heck cocktails poured strong.

-Breakfast, lunch and dinner. The bar opens at 7 am and closes at 3 am, offering food day and night. And actually, the food isn't half bad! Vegan food available too.

-The bathrooms. Oh god whats has happened in those bathrooms, we don't want to know. Grafitti is abundant and who knows what else you'll see or find.

-The jukebox. The number one song on the jukebox is Motorheads "Ace of Spades," you'll find it all from hip hop to punk rock.

If you head to Indy, and plan on drinking the Cat is a place to go. You haven't drank in Indianapolis until you "close the Cat."
