About
The largest children's museum in the world just got even bigger with the addition of a new 7.5-acre outdoor health and fitness area that encourages activity through multiple sports. The new space, called Riley Children's Health Sports Legends Experience includes basketball, football, hockey, soccer, pedal car racing (drag strip and oval track), golf, baseball, and tennis. The indoor portion of the new area includes the National Art Museum of Sport along with the World of Sport and History of Hoops. The Children's Museum of Indianapolis itself is made up of 500,000 square feet with exhibits and activities that are fun and interesting for the entire family as they explore the physical and natural sciences, history, world cultures and the arts through exciting interactive exhibits on five floors. Families will discover some of the most rare dinosaur fossils in the world and see what it's like to live and work in space. There's also a theater with children's plays and live entertainment.

Nice for younger family.

I truly enjoyed parts of the museum with my 9 year old granddaughter, yet other parts were for younger children and she did not want to go into those areas. She did enjoy the speaker near the fish habitat on the fourth floor. Most of the outdoor sports area was not her thing. I would have liked to have seen more for her age group. We had a good day but could have been better. Food is costly so just know that. Some brought in snacks etc. You have to check in each time you go from the museum to the sports side. Downloading my tickets to show them was quite slow at times. Upload early while in line. Arts and crafts classes are a sign up at the Concierge stand. I did not know that and sat there waiting. Glad I walked over to ask. There was one small sign saying I was expected to see to know to sign up. I had gotten there another way and had not seen it. So, sign up. LOL Dinosaur area wasn't much.

Disappointed
Jul 2021 • Family
Given how large it is, I thought this would be a great museum. It’s not. My seven year old was bored and so were my husband and I. The exhibits aren’t that interesting and there isn’t as many interactive activities as at other museums. Considering how expensive this museum is, I would expect it to be much better. The dinosaur exhibit was closed, which was very disappointing. Maybe younger children would like it better. I think it’s geared to smaller kids. The building itself also seems very dated and the gift shop is so expensive, as most museum gift shops are. Our favorite part was the outdoor sports area but being summer, it was unbearably hot. They have very little shade, which seems like it could be remedied easily and install some outdoor fans. The turf is even hotter than regular grass so it was uncomfortable. I would not come back.

Nice but very expensive
Jul 2021 • Family
We took our two grandchildren age 8 &11. They enjoyed the exhibits. The snack bar prices were outrageous. For 3 Pretzels, popcorn and 2 waters was $31. The gift shop we bought 2 small stuffed animals and 4 dinosaur shaped pop its (which are $3-$4 everywhere else) The pop its were 11.99. We spent over a 100 for those small things. As grandparents we could afford that but alot of parents probably can't. I felt like those two areas were extreme price gouging and in that way they could be more family friendly.

Kids trip

If your looking to see exhibits focused on certain topica like dinosaurs, Barbie, old toys/tv, science, trains and more then go visit this place. They have exhibits that are always changing. Also they have a great outdoor sports exhibit that literally lets you do almost every sport available for all ages. My son thought this was amazing and would have stayed all day if he could have. This is a nice place for kids to learn things and also have fun

Expectations Not Met
Jul 2021 • Family
Maybe my expectations were set too high given the ticket price and national attention, but they weren't met. In terms of critical feedback to the museum, the outdoor Sports Legends Experience desparately needs some playground shades or sail shades to make it more comfortable for children. The indoor attractions are alright, but it didn't feel good as a parent to hear my 4, 7 and 8 yo children complain of boredom. My 7 yo liked playing tennis the most, but many communities provide free access to courts. I don't recommend this museum for tourists, but this opinion is tied to my sense of value for cost.

Great place but most things roped off due to COVID
Jun 2021
We were driving cross-country and this looked like a cool place to visit. It was very disappointing that much of the museum was roped off. You'd think they'd either steeply discount the tickets or at least warn you. I really wanted to see those dinosaurs though and they were kind of cool. I didn't expect to be be moved by the 'children in history' displays. It was deserted as everyone was in the more show-y parts of of the museum but I just stood and soaked it in. Enjoyed that part.

enjoyable, but somewhat disappointing
Jun 2021
We spent much of the day here during our visit to Indianapolis, having heard a lot of good things about the museum. It was enjoyable, but for the price and reputation we were somewhat disappointed.

It is a nice facility with interesting exhibits, but many activities require enough time that we spent much of the day in lines, despite limited capacity due to COVID. The activities themselves were fun, but there wasn't much opportunity for older children to learn things. Having more panels with information would have made the experience more enjoyable, especially while waiting in lines.

The outdoor area was the most enjoyable, but here, too, the lines were somewhat frustrating. I'm glad that we went, but I don't think we would spend the money to go again.

(FREE parking is a nice bonus, though!)

So many fun exhibits!
Jun 2021
We spent the entire day at the museum with a 4.5 year old. We got there 20 minutes after it opened and closed it down- she wouldn't even stop for lunch! Every exhibit had something hands on and fun for her. We also loved the performance in the Lilly Theater! It was a fun "Sherlock Holmes" style play, and we all enjoyed it! The outdoor sports area was a HUGE hit where she got to try some sports we don't have where we're from, like hockey! Would totally recommend for a special visit!

Enjoyed by all

It had a ton of different exhibits. Each had something that my children enjoyed. We stayed 4 hours and didn't get through everything. I wish we could have stayed longer.

Could have been a great place to spend a day. However many of the hands on experiences were closed due to COVID. Layout was good. Eating was pricey.
