About
From a replica of a real French chateau to a working loom one could hold in the palm of one's hand, the Museum of Miniature Houses features a vast collection of exquisite miniature houses, vignettes and artisan pieces. "I had no idea anything like this existed!" is a phrase often heard from newcomers, who marvel at the intricacy involved in creating objects on such a small scale. Children and teens love doing the treasure hunts and the little ones get to play with a real dollhouse. In addition to a permanent collection, the Museum has rotating exhibits that change frequently. If you are a miniaturist yourself you can visit our well-stocked shop (no admission fee necessary for shoppers.) Touring the Museum of Miniature Houses is a truly unique experience, one which the whole family can enjoy.

Wonderful for adults and children. A perfect way to spend the afternoon. Take the time to look at each display from different angles. You find something new each time

Lots of detail to enjoy

In the Arts District of Carmel, this museum holds many dozens of miniature houses. The houses were built in various decades and reflect various architectural and design styles. Houses are filled with interesting furniture, artwork, staircases, chandeliers, magazines from the time period, people, pets, and even mice. Our favorites included the Sherlock Holmes room and a house with a hidden compartment holding a letter to a grandchild from the grandparent who built the house. We stayed for nearly 90 minutes, until closing, and could have spent even more time there. I'd recommend this for curious men and women, young and old.

Hours of Fun
Jul 2018 • Family
Don't expect a modern, sleek, spacious museum building. This one is an old house with many rooms. We were greeted by a museum keeper who opened the door for us, kept my umbrella in a closet, and kindly explained what to do in the museum. They offer an audio guide, but we chose to read the binders with descriptions of the collection, which are placed in every room. The facility is nothing fancy, but homey and personal, and the collection is fascinating with variety of time periods and places, and the display shows some innovative ideas . Highly recommend!

Great artistry

We enjoyed the audio tour as we walked through this impressive collection of miniature houses and other miniatures. Great artistry, skill, and detail went into the creation of these miniatures. We spent approximately 30-45 minutes visiting the various rooms in this museum.

So glad to hear our free audio tour was helpful. Hope you come back again, maybe for our Founders' Exhibit in the fall to celebrate our 25th anniversary.

unbelievable place! Doll houses from 1820 and beyond! The workmanship is amazing. Be prepared to be amazed at the quality of the interiors of each house. There must be 6-8 rooms FILLED with miniature houses from all over the world. I could have lingered all day. Downtown Carmel and their Arts District is a treat and only 15 minutes from downtown Indy.

Thanks, Pamela. It's seven rooms so you are right on. Six of them are in a 126-year-old farmhouse, which is kind of cool as well. So glad you enjoyed your visit.

Exhibits of great craftsmanship and art

Miniature houses are exact replicas of the real thing, unlike dollhouse which is designed as a plaything. The Museum of Miniature Houses in Carmel, Indiana was created by three Indiana based miniaturists. It is one of you only five museums in the USA devoted to the art of scale miniatures. Its permanent collection is housed in seven rooms and comprises 30 fully-furnished houses, 50 room settings and collections that range from dolls to slide rules to antique linens.
Houses and buildings, furniture and fittings, human, pets and other animal figures, clothings and tapestry, tools of artisans and craftsmen, modes of transport from horse drawn carriages to cars, railway stocks and social scenes of different countries at different periods of history have been miniaturised on a scale of 12:1 i,e., one foot is reduced to one inch. The precise scale, historical accuracy and fine craftsmanship of all the exhibits make them magical tiny renditions of the real world.
A visit to this museum is a wonderful learning experience.

This is not about children's doll houses. These are really truly miniatures.

I rate museums in miles - how far is it worth going to see. If you are into miniatures, it is easily a 50 mile museum. If you are not, it is still about a 15 mile museum. (It is only about 8 miles of I-465.) Floor space isn't big, but nothing else is either. It will still take a lot of time to digest just what has been done. When you see the detail, you will marvel. The period pieces are just so correct. Most are scaled a 1/12, but some are 1/24 and even a few 1/48. Yes, place setting, candles and all. My favorite was the carpenter shop. but it is all a wonder. Be very sure to check hours and admission. It took us a while to get there because our passing time was always wrong.

We appreciate your review and your understanding that miniatures are an art form in themselves, full of creativity and craftsmanship, and not simply "child's play."

"This place is so unique, you have to see it to believe it."

Our two oldest granddaughters were on spring break and we needed to keep them occupied. So, we took them to see this great museum in Carmel. They were fascinated with the tiny people, dogs, cats and miniature houses. Congrats to these volunteers for offering this unique museum.

Miniature museum with BIG returns!

Great place to take in all kinds of teeny "eye candy"! Lovely lady running museum and exhibits are varied and plentiful. Made me pull out my doll house items upon my return home! Great visit for young ladies who like to dream!
