visited for sunrise and boy did it deliver ! it’s a fairly tough walk up (very slippy when wet!) but manageable in 15-20 minutes. we timed it perfectly as we arrived at the lighthouse just as there was a strip of light on the horizon....More

The highlight of our east coast trip. The road out is no worse than any other gravel road in NZ. We were in a large Maui style campervan, made it fine just narrow in places......the access to the lighthouse is signposted took about 20min to...More

We followed everyone else's recommendations and drove to the lighthouse. The road is really bad for a camper, at the end the road if fenced off by the land owners so you can't get to the lighthouse, but you can see it from the road....More

It's about a 25 kilometer drive on a mostly gravel road to the lighthouse from Te Araroa. There is a small parking area and a path with over 800 wooden steps up to the East Cape Lighthouse. The ocean view on top was really nice...More

We were recommended taking this detour on our journey around the East Cape and I am glad we made the effort. The road is mostly unsealed and does stretch for 20 kms but the view at the end is worth it. We didn't climb the...More

The lighthouse is a well worthwhile detour from the road around the East Cape. Allow several hours to negotiate the narrow and mostly unsealed road as well as the climb up to the lighthouse. Be prepared for a workout climbing the 700+ steps to the...More

Great view. It is especially nice because to get to it one has to climb 700 steps up a steep hill. Go there before sunrise and watch the sunrise from the top. Road from Te Araroa town to lighthouse is all gravel. It is about...More

Did the drive in a 2 wheel drive sedan, and although there was some rain, managed fine on the gravel roads. Be careful to slow down when approaching other cars, and there are a few narrow bits where cars can’t pass each other (when pulling...More

The lighthouse is a pleasant though steep hike up a hill, miles away from the main road (which also is miles away from any road of importance ;-) Good views from the top, but you cannot enter the lighthouse proper. Little shipping traffic around East...More

No tours that I'm aware of. It's not a place tourists visit often due to long drive - only 1% of all tourists drive the coast road from Opotiki to Te Araroa where road to lighthouse is. The single lane road in is narrow and... More
