A Wheaton tradition since 1921
Nov 2020
I wonder if football legend Red Grange, the most famous resident of Wheaton, Illinois, ever visited the Little Popcorn Store. Nearing its 100th anniversary, the Little Popcorn Store is a local treasure, perhaps the world's smallest store of any kind. Located at 111 West Front Street, at Main Street, in downtown Wheaton, one of Chicago's western suburbs, it is only 49 inches wide by 60 feet long. It is like walking into a Norman Rockwell painting with popcorn freshly popped and candy lining the walls. The late owner Bill Wakefield, who ran the business for more than 40 years before passing away in 2019, pointed out that what separates his popcorn from others is the use of white corn, which is sweeter, smaller and less tough than yellow corn. Also, it is lighter and doesn't need butter. Just add vegetable oil and a light amount of salt. But only one flavor, no caramel or cheese. Candy lovers can choose from gummis, candy corn, candy dots, chocolate covered marshmallows, Reece's pumpkins, Mary Janes, Necco's wafers, salter pumpkin seeds, peppermint, penny candy, root beer barrels and many others. Also on sale are posters, ornaments, note cards and other artwork. The Little Popcorn Store is open from 10 to 9 Monday through Saturay and from noon to 5 on Sunday.

Cute, but no flavors
Jul 2020
Of course it's amazing to think this popcorn shop (world's smallest?) has been around for so long. Lots of candies to get if you'd like. But shockingly, only one flavor of popcorn was offered... and it was very bland plain! Absolutely a tragedy of epic proportions. Given it's a "popcorn store" there should at least be caramel or cheese options. I'm just very confused.

Cutest popcorn store ever!
Mar 2020
Read about this in "Only in Your State" and knew that we had to take a mini road trip to check it out, along with a few other local places. Love this store! How can you not ... it used be an alley! And it has been there 99 years. While we were waiting a few minutes for our fresh popcorn, the employee gave us some local history tidbits too that were very interesting. And, there is quite the candy selection as well. Love that the actual address on the door is 111 1/4. Prices on all of their items were very reasonable. Definitely will go back when in the area - especially since I told our granddaughter about it and she really wants to visit - so of course we will.

This is a novel gem in the community. Its a goto when we have the kids. It is the closest thing to an old fashion penny candy store and the popcorn is goo too.

This used to be called the In Between Popcorn Store because it is made in a gangway between two buildings. It is narrow and has great charm! Kids and adults love the quirkiness of this great little candy and popcorn shop. One wall is lined with jars of candy to pick from and toward the back they make the best popcorn in town! This store has been there since I was a kid and I'm well past 60 now and it is still loved by many!! I hope it never goes out of business as it is one of the most famous places in Wheaton!

Small but nostalgic candy store
Apr 2019 • Friends
Remember nickel candy ie Mary Janes, Red hots. Well this little shop in Downtown Wheaton, has them...Not for a nickel anymore. But their selection is fun and a great way to introduce young folks to what we use to enjoy.

PS They also have Bulls eye's
