I found it on Google maps, Gervais collected us from the Hydro electric plant and took us on his boat to his wonderful hotel/restaurant. Fresh fish (caught from the lake), was pretty amazing, and the spectacular views absolutely amazing.
He now has 2 double rooms, overlooking the lake, so be one of the first to enjoy - at a reasonable price 100 US dollars per night, including boat and breakfast - before the crowds come.
We phoned him on +250 788 572 697 and he sorted everything.

Just to view the lake is absolutely peaceful and calming. We drove around to see the lake in the early afternoon and I felt calm and it was an enjoyable sight to see.

Couldn’t find information on visiting the lakes in our own car or the location of a car park, so we drove towards Virunga Lodge and turned off toward the isthmus between the lakes. It’s a nice dirt road with lots of human traffic. Drove on to the dam area, stopped and got out at the bridge. We walked down to Burera first and enjoyed the view from the shore. Back on the road, we crossed the bridge on foot and walked uphill to view Ruhondo from above. Another lovely view.

While staying at the Gorilla Mountain View Lodge we visited the twin Lakes of Burera and Rohondo. The lakes are situated about a 30 minute drive from the lodge with the last mile or so down a rocky track through a number of small villages. The lakes are surrounded by steep hills and large waterfalls with a backdrop of the volcanic mountains, nearby is the border with Uganda. The two lakes which are deep blue in colour are separated by a 1km wide strip of land which is believed to be an ancient lava flow from Sabyinyo a nearby extinct volcano. The views of the lakes from the hillside are amazing. There are a number of Islands in the lakes some of which are inhabited.

Incredible team! I did several adventures with amazing Kingfisher guides while in Kigali. The shore walk, canoeing, delicious lunch and then challenging bike tour on the Volcanoes' belt were amazing two days. KEVIN is a wonderful safe driver and guide, always on time and ready to support, inform, adapt. The canoeing experience was smooth and all went perfectly on the logistics, also, the grilled fish was delicious. FRANCIS was absolutely a great, professional guide on the biking tour which I Ioved so much and which brought us across beautiful villages and views, with thanks to LEANDRE and NINAH again for the swift coordination and flexibility .

Great birding on and around the lake (the former of which is best done via canoe, especially with Kingfisher Journeys); peaceful and relaxing, with beautiful views of the volcanoes; and a few good options for getting drinks lakeside and/or staying a night or two on Ruhondo in particular.

We made a 45 km biking tour (organized by Lava Bike Tours; very recommendable tour operator) from Musanze to the Twin Lakes. A really great tour through the villages and the amazing landscape. We had lunch at an island in Lake Ruhondo with a beautiful view over the lakes to the volcanoes.
From my point of view the Twin Lakes are worth to visit if you do a biking or hiking tour to get there. Just going there by car seems to be not that interesting, since the lakes themselves are nice, but the way to the lakes through the village is really amazing.

We took a boat cruise to Lake Ruhondo in December 2016. The car park is of some distance away from the lake side. We saw many types of birds when we walk from the car park to the lake side. We saw African Crown Crane, Hadada Ibis, Black Sawwing, Weaver, African Fish Eagle etc. We boarded the boat at the lake side. The boat cruised slowly and we saw people transporting goods using sampan and fishing in the lake. The scenery is nice with the mountain at the backdrop. We also saw some Comarant, Sacred Ibis, Yellow bill ducks and Yellow bill Storks. The boat finally brought us to an island. The villagers all rush to the lake side, dancing and singing happily as our boat cruised nearer to the island. I think nearly everyone in the village were there , cheering happily for our arrival. I understand that part of our tour proceeds will go to the village. As we disembark from the boat, they welcome us to dance and sing together with them. We would easily be influenced by their cheerful mood and joined in the singing and dancing. The children were so happy to see the photo and video that we took of them. At the end, they sent us off with singing and dancing. I think this daily visit must be their main entertainment.

We elected to visit these twin lakes as part of our itinerary and I am so glad we did! Not too far from the Volcanoes National Park, it is an easy drive which finished at a look out point from Virunga Lodge. The views and scenary are just breath taking. We were lucky to visit on a clear, sunny day. Although we didnt spend long here, I am sure there are plenty of hiking trails etc around. The Lakes are fascinating since they are seperate by a naroow stretch of land and are completely different levels.
