We have the privilege of going to Kumgang San in Oct 2007, must have been a period of friendliness between the two Korea's. I believe it is currently inaccessible to outsiders. We were part of a 29 bus convoy. The interesting part was that I was the only westerner in the group. Thank goodness my wife(A South Korean) could translate for me. There was lots of rules about the trip, what to take, how to act etc. Once in the tourist village there were plenty of freedoms. Most of the staff appeared to be military or ex-military but were exceptionally friendly. The scenery was spectacular, pristine and almost untouched. We had some great hikes to some stunning lookouts. (Careful what you photograph as you are being watched - best to ask you tour assistant if in doubt). The cultural centre puts on some great shows and displays of North Korean talent. There is a seafood restaurant near the floating hotel (Forgot the name) that is a not to be missed. If you get the chance to go make sure you do, it is simply beautiful scenery.

Visited the Mt Kumgang 30 August. This park is stunningly beautiful with its mountain, forests, river and spectacular waterfall. This is a must for travellers to North Korea.

Mount Kumgang is one of the five beautiful mountains in North Korea. This mountain has several names depend on the season, during spring it was called Kumgangsan. And this mountain is very near with South Korea border and it is highly guarded. Mount Kumgang is also nicknamed as thousand peaks mountain. This is one of the main nature attraction in North Korea. Climbing up and down takes about 2-3 hours depend on your pace, a lot of beautiful spots to take photo. Many waterfalls and ponds at Mount Kumgang and the water is crystal clear. At the end of the hike, there is a beautiful waterfall called Kuryong Falls, it is amazing to see the white water falls from the top. The environment is really clean and free of pollution as not too many tourists visiting this amazing beautiful mountain. After the long hike down, you will have chance to eat lunch at a restaurant by the river. Typical Korea food but delicious. The pathway was good and just wear a comfortable walking shoes. Bring water and snacks so you can sit down and enjoy the serenity of the nature.

Home of some of DPRK's spectacular national landscapes and best hiking. Drive along the East Sea. Hike to Kuryong Waterfall. An 8 km round trip hike to scenic waterfall through forests and along mountain streams. Steepest climb is up to observe the seven emerald pools. Worth the work to experiences the outstanding views.

If only more national parks were like this. You feel perfectly alone and in the wilds of the country and you see practically no body. However there must be people around because nature alone doesn't do such a good job of looking immaculate. A really pleasant hiking destination. The pathway is well maintained and very safe. Not a scrap of litter anywhere. Hike up to the Kowloon waterfall and then do the further loop to the top of that. If this mountain was in China, there would be a guy cooking noodles at the top of the trail. (Think LaoShan near Tsingtao.) I guess there aren't enough people to go around here. There are a couple of strategically placed springs spouting fresh mountain water out of the rocks. It is very tempting to strip off and dive into one of the mountain pools. Our guide advised against this.
Make sure you return before dark because at night, the trail really is treacherous.
Whilst in the area, be sure to visit Lake Samilpo. Tripadvisor doesn't recognise the place so I can't write a separate review. The lake is a short drive from Mount Kumgang. It is stunningly beautiful and great hiking territory. A big time king visited here a couple of thousand years ago and he stayed 3 days. Hence the name. I could probably do the same.
Mount Kumgang and Lake Samilpo are in a restricted zone which used to be accessible to Koreans from the South of the country. The mountain and the lake were places for rendezvous. Since cross border visiting has been suspended, the area is pretty deserted so make the best of it before reunification happens.

Lovely scenery, even in the rain! Sadly much of the buildings and facilities are shut, due to the lack of tourists.

Most people think a trip to North Korea is nothing but monuments and propaganda, but there are some breathtakingly beautiful natural areas in the country. Mount Kumgang is one of them, and I went on a really nice hike to a waterfall. It actually reminded me a bit of Yosemite National Park.
