We spent most of the day at the Illinois Railroad Museum, and then came here for apple picking in the afternoon. When we arrived, they said that the apples were all picked, but we could collect off the ground for $0.80/pound and handed us plastic bags. We wandered the small orchard and collected a couple of bags of apples. (they also had Asian pears, but I'm not really a pear fan. I was disappointed that everything in the store came from somewhere else - the apple cider donuts were made elsewhere, the cider was from Wisconsin, the honey was from southern il. The store had nice stuff, but it was pretty pricey - $8 for a bag of soup mix. The bagged apples in the store also came from somewhere else. Meanwhile, there were piles of rotting apples all along the edges of the orchard and A LOT of apples spoiling on the ground. The waste was disturbing. Squeak's favorite thing was the pile of straw bales, and she played there happily for over an hour. verdict: we had fun, in large part because the weather was perfect and we were hanging out with friends. we wouldn't make a special visit to come here, but may be back if we're in the neighborhood.

My husband and I wanted to pick our own apples but we have our days off in the middle of the week so this can be problematic. We found this lovely small orchard, not too far away ( about 45 min. away) where we could go midweek. Family owned, it is very sweet and not hugely commercial. A peck of Honey crisp apples (bag) costs $26 to pick but that's the fun and they are really good! It was lots of fun and we really enjoyed it.

Prairie Sky Orchard is a small-scale, low-key, family owned orchard. It has an onsite store, so there's a mixture of "U-pick" and pre-packaged apples, along with a nice selection of spices, honeys, home made pies, caramel, etc... The owners are very friendly and more than happy to strike up a conversation. An added bonus is it's less than 10 minutes from the Illinois Railway Museum. Oh, and did i mention their Honey Crisp apples are delicious? So, if you're looking for a no-frills apple picking experience, or you're passing through or visiting the area, Prairie Sky is definitely worth a visit.

This is a great place if you want JUST the apple picking experience without all of the circus that has become orchards and pumpkin farms around here. Price was semi-reasonable for a good size bag of apples, they were delicious and we ate them all before I could make anything like pie or crisp with them. Will definitely come back here as long as they keep it simple!

After a bad experience down the road, we decided to try this orchard out! Very relaxing here, peaceful, and you buy the apples by the bag 17$ for 1 peck bag not by the person so not a rip off for large families. Apples are fresh and healthy and tasty. We will be back again this fall!
