I've been visiting the Illinois Railway Museum for years now. If you love trains, like I do, this place is paradise. There are nine 'barns' full of various engines and cars. One of my favorites is Barn 9, which houses the steam locomotives. I love those! There are also exhibits outside--such as an el platform. There's an old station full... More

A terrific place to take the kids. Reasonable admission fee, easy free parking. The train rides are awesome for young and old. Great memories come back for the seniors and are fun and a learning experience for the kids.

My family and I have been sustaining family members of Illinois Railway Museum (IRM) (irm.org) for many years. I am a 'steam head' (a person who revels in the sights, smells and thrills of riding the rails on and helping others learn about the 'old time' mode of travel afforded by railroad travel of yesteryear); so much so that when... I visited this place during my visit to chicago. A must visit place for rail road fans and enthusiast. Reaching there was a bit challenging from chicago but we managed well and had good experience.

I visited this place from Chicago city and it was worth going there. Very well preserved rail engines and coaches. It was overall very nice experience. Reaching there was a bit different from usual as we went by train from Chicago to Woodstock and then cab from there to museum.

Our group of six from Vermont visited the Museum on a Saturday in September. Weather and temperatures were pleasant. The grounds and buildings were well maintained. Most of the trains and equipment have been restored to a very high quality. Just about every piece had a sign attached with a detailed description. There was a trolley which circled the perimeter... I had DREAMED of coming to this place for many years. I am a large rail fan and when I heard a business trip would drop me a little more than one hour away I jumped at the opportunity to visit. I re-arranged my trip and rented a car. I was so excited to see this amazing museum with it's... More

I've visited IRM twice now, as part of a group. The collection of railway equipment is extensive, their use of that same equipment is more than many railway places, and they actively are restoring and expanding their collection. A great facility maintained by volunteers; HATS OFF to those people.

Place is awesome. They have different types of trains. Steam, diesel and electric locomotives. Even buses. Great place to take children. They have a nice train ride. In August Thomas is there for two weekends.
