A hidden gem! Found it by accident because our son wanted to kayak and it was the only rental place around. The surprise was the setting: absolutely gorgeous wildlife preserve with a cool water trail to follow through to a pond with the oldest bald cypress in Illinois (1000 years +) in the middle of Eagle pond. The place is unassuming and it is pretty much a swamp. The staff though is super friendly and there wasn’t much bugs. We spent a couple hours paddling around. The map we were given is rudimentary and the markers not always clear and easy to find but it is never the less hard to get lost. Saw lots of herons and turtles. Highly recommend!!

This place is now called Cache Bayou Outfitters. We rented 4 kayaks for 4 hours, rather than do a guided tour. We arrived early enough that the guide let us listen in to the rules and tips that the group was getting (how to turn, stop, what to do if an Asian carp jumps on your kayak). We appreciated that, since 3/4 of us had been kayaking only once before and even then it’s been years, and it was the first time for our 4th person. I believe Megan was the guide’s name, and she was great! The group went their way and we went ours. The map and trail markers aren’t the best and we got lost on our way to the pond (however it was better once we realized what the markers look like and what to watch for). The area is breathtaking! The water is so nice and calm, and you don’t have to worry about bigger boats. We anticipated bugs being bad but they weren’t at all. I would totally do this again. We all agreed that we liked going at our own pace, but the tour would’ve been great too to learn about the area. One thing to note: once you leave the dock area, that’s it—there’s no place to stop. Bring water, sunscreen, waterproof case for your phone & keys. If you have a sun shirt put it on before you leave otherwise you have to take your life jacket off while floating (against the rules on the waiver, and scary if you’re not super comfortable yet!). 5 Stars!!

Awesome experience! My wife and I rented a tandem kayak from Mark and did a self guided tour. We hadn’t kayaked since 2008, so we had to relearn a few things. Other than that, it was beautiful! Full sun and light winds. Some of the trees had started to turn colors. The fish were active in the shallows and the birds were still chirping away. I’d definitely do this trip again and would recommend it to anyone who loves the outdoors. Cypress tree swamps in Illinois!?!?!?! Who knew!

We LOVE to add another route for ways to enjoy the Shawnee National Forest Region of Southern Illinois. After hikes, bike rides, and just car driving, it feels great to allow Mark to show you the sights and take in the peacefulness of the Cache River!

We had a 2 hour guided tour with Mark. Not only was it beautiful to be out on the water canoeing among the cypress it was fun. Mark is so very knowable and has an infectious laugh. I would love to do this again should I have a chance to be in the area in the future.
