Best viewed from the East side, approached via unmade stone chipping road (1/2 hour). Track of about 1.5km walk from Dettifoss viewpoint over boulders. A truly impressive waterfall - not a great drop but length of fall is impressive.

It seems people have confused this waterfall with the town of selfoss. Selfoss town is in south Iceland but the Selfoss waterfall in the North. It is located right next to the Detifoss waterfall so when you visit Detifoss you visit Selfoss waterfall. Detifoss is really powerfull and enormous, so definately worth a visit. I wasnt really impressed with the Selfoss waterfalls though, but it's a nice trip with Detifoss.

Selfoss and Dettifoss are next to each other. Having seen Dettifoss first, Selfoss was not as impressive. You may want to to Selfoss first. Selfoss is .7km from the halfway point to Dettifoss. It is a pretty waterfall in a different way then Dettifoss.

Hi guys,
If you have managed to walk to the Dettifoss, move on and visit the Selfoss.
It is a short hike, not very easy, but doable.
But when it rains, be careful.
It is a beautifull fall.
More beautifull than The Dettifoss.
regards
Schliek.
PS. It is for free.

No matter what side of Dettifoss you are on, you can hike to see this. The west side offers a nice view but the East side is where you can get really close and see its power. Its a series of waterfalls that sort of curve this slope to make a big hook. We were there when it had been raining a lot so the water was really powerful and flowing. Made for a great stop and worth the hike from both sides to see the views.

The hike from Dettifoss is not bad. It is really easy on the West side but a little more tricky on the East side with rocks and stuff to climb over.

It was a cool day when we visited even though it was July. Jacket, beanie, gloves kind of day. It's a short, flat walk to the start of the falls and my pics give you an idea of it. Take some time to check out the plant life and some of the rock formations.
Make sure little ones stay away from the edges as they are slippery and if they fall in - they won't come out.
I went to walk down another path that actually takes you to the big drop of the falls but my iPhone 6+ froze with 30% battery left, despite it being inside my jacket pocket.
The views on the boardwalks is well worthwhile but you will get wet from the spray off the waterfall.
There are toilets here but they get hammered with people using them and toilet paper is rare.
There is alot of parking so you don't have to worry about that.
No touristy shops or food / drinks here so it's a site where you visit, enjoy and move on.
I can't recommend coming here enough.
Enjoy

Iceland is not short of world class waterfalls, and Selfoss is no exception.

We ended up in the area to see Dettifoss, but when I realized that Selfoss was less than a mile walk on the same set of trails there was no way I wasn't going to go.

You can view Selfoss from the cliff's edge well away from the waterfall. In fact, if you walk to the actual falls it is hard to see up close.

Worth 30-60 minutes to take a stroll over to view Selfoss.

very beautiful waterfalls. Those who arrive from the western entrance can not get near the waterfalls. Those who arrive from the eastern entrance will benefit from a much better view of the waterfalls

This waterfall is in a series of 3 main waterfalls in the area. All waterfalls can be viewed from either side, but this waterfall in particular is best viewed, as well as photographed from the eastern side. The road to get there is, shall I say, terrible. Washboard, and big jagged gravel (I hope you have extra gravel protection for insurance). If you can get through the bad roads, the views are worth it. It is about 1km hike (pretty well marked) from the parking through a small boulder field (fairly easy for sturdier people), then it levels out. From a photography perspective, there is a little clearing that goes right down to the water. If you can get down there and a bit further upstream, the falls will offer a spectacular view. Time didn't allow us to go down there but I know the view is spectacular. If you stay up top, you still get a great view and some great photos or video. Worth the hike!! A must see. On a side note, Dettifoss is right at the beginning of the 1km hike as well, but that fall is best viewed on the other side (about 60km round trip).

An easy hike leads to the beautiful waterfall. It's definitely worth watching, but for me Dettifoss was more powerful, and more extraordinary.
