Located @ Snaefellness peninsula about 130km from capital city of Reykjavik . Hexagonal shape basalt column neatly stacked in row along the cliff. Formed after volcanic eruption / lava coolness.......goggle for info......too complicated to explain 😅 geologist graduates/ students will love them.
Similar basalt column can be found at ' Black Beach ' in Reynisfjara

The Colin’s are quite remarkable as they look like a man made fortress. It’s a short detour off the main road and worth the stop. Don’t bother climbing to the top unless you want to climb for fun. The best view is at the bottom.

There is not much to do here unless you choose to climb to the top. The view is best from below though and on a sunny day with blue skies these columns look beautiful. The wall looks like a fortress and it is amazing that this is all natural. There is easy parking so it is well worth a stop.

Nice on the journey stop. Wouldn’t plan a trip around it but good stop off main route. Signage was not great. Easy to miss if you didn’t map it. The cliffs were easy climb and pretty to look at.

When you drive along Route 54 from Borgarnes heading towards Snæfellsnes Peninsula, you’ll see this huge wall of basalt columns coming up in front of you. As the road turns, the columns will be on your right. The Gerðuberg Basalt Columns are located about 30 minutes from Borgarnes. Look for signage from Route 54 directing you to turn onto a gravel road. Drive on gravel road for a few minutes to arrive at the base of the basalt columns. These are amazing formations. You can park your car by the road (there isn’t any designated parking area) and walk up to the basalt columns. We were short of time and just took a few pictures and left. It’s a quick easy detour from the main road. Worth checking out.
If you continue driving down the gravel road past the basalt columns, you’ll get to Rauðamelsölkelda mineral spring. The water in Rauðamelsölkelda has carbonic acid so it looks like it is boiling. I only read about it but didn’t have the chance to visit this time.

I'm a little embarrassed to say that we drove several hours out of our way to visit these columns. We were on a two week trip driving around the perimeter of Iceland and had already driven by these columns without being aware of their existence until we'd driven around the peninsula and were on the northern edge of it. I wanted to see them so we drove back across the peninsula for over an hour and spent probably 30 minutes here at the max. I also didn't realize that we were coming back a third time later in the trip. They are worth a brief stop if you do so as part of the route you were intending to take in the first place but you probably shouldn't do what I did.
Thanks for reading. If you’ve found this helpful I’ll appreciate a thumbs up below.

This was a planned stop while on a two day Snaefellsness Peninsula tour with Extreme Iceland. It had been snowing quite heavily that day but our guide,Thrush, lead us on a precise path to the base of the columns. We were literally knee deep in freshly fallen snow and it was Extreme-ly cold but we'll always remember this experience and the sight of the formidable wall of columns. Recommend a visit if you're already in the area to see the other sights.

If you're driving, watch carefully for the inconspicuous lane with a small sign that says Gerduberg on the 3rd line. The lane is a rocky dusty one but after a few minutes, you see these amazing cliffs!
Wear very comfortable fitting shoes to climb the steep slope. The vegetation on the sides of the cliff are very deeply rooted and so helpful as you make your way up and esp down. It takes about 5 minutes to get to the top and definitely worth the effort.

I like geology and the different environments that Iceland has to offer. This is something you can get close up to and walk around and even on top. Free. Easy to get to. Worth a quick stop (maybe not in winter though).

The view of the cliffs from the bottom is unique and interesting. The scramble to the top is somewhat precarious, but rewarding if the weather is clear. After you visit the cliffs, continue down the road to visit Raudamelsokelda, a bubbling mineral spring, waterfall, and lava field at the end of the road.
