Very beautiful turf roof church in South Iceland. We drove up, parked, read the signs and leaned a bit of history, then left. Maybe stayed for 20 minutes? Beautiful and quick stop.

A lovely little church. Unfortunately it wasn't open when we visited but what you saw from the outside was what mattered. The turf roof is well maintained and a great photo opportunity.

This church is unique and I had no idea it was a house of worship. The building is traditionally Icelandic, and the thatched roof does not distract from the surrounding landscape.

Just off Route 1 in the village of Hof is this turf covered church from 19C. Tiny place surrounded by trees as was typical. Information panel gives some history. Worth a quick stop

The church itself is a cute little stop for a picture, but there isn't much else around. I wouldn't go out of your way to stop here, but if it's on your path, it makes for a fun picture. We spent about 10 minutes here stretching our legs and taking some fun pictures. Enjoy!

Well it has a turf room like all the ancient churches had but only a few left now. Unusual burial arrangements too! It looks as if the coffins are laid on the ground and covered with soil and turf. Very clean and even spotless toilets with a heater!

Good for a stop to take a short walk and stretch the legs. Old cemetery. Smelting rock. WC near church was open to public. Right off the main road.

This is a beautiful turf church worth a quick visit.

The Hofskirkja church has survived 130 years of Iceland's unpredictable weather patterns and is located in the Öræfi region in southeast Iceland about 20 km east of Vatnajökull glacier.

Turf houses became the new style of architechture near the end of the 18th century, which helped shield the residents from the harsh Icelandic winters. The basic structure includes wooden trees as the framework with turf covering the remainder of the structure. However, it is rare for these types of structure to last this long, and any remaining turf houses standing in Iceland have been well kept to fend off mother nature.

Hofskirkja church is still a practicing parish church, which is maintained by the National Museum of Iceland. The roof is made of stone slabs and voered by the turf. Additionally, Hofskirkja church is one of six churces in Iceland that are preserved as historical monuments.

This is the last turf roofed church built in Iceland (1882). It is in the hamlet of Hof, about 160 km east of Vik on highway The grassy mounds around the church are old graves, so please treat accordingly
