This was a very small museum, with mostly modern art. We went with our 2 year old and found it to be very sparsely filled with art installations. There wasn't very much on display from any other periods or styles...a wall covered with barbed wire and ripped-up tires was the main display, while other pieces were a stack of suitcases and some fancy glass bottles. If you are a fan of modern art installations and local artists, this is your place. If you like a large, traditional art museum with more historic pieces and lots of time periods (like armor and impressionism), then head to the Art Institute in Chicago.

One bonus of being a museum member is the openings each new exhibit. The gallery tour is not to be missed as the artist(s) or the museum curator explains what we are seeking and answers questions. For a museum of its size, the Rockford Art Museum has an extensive permanent collection as well as being able to attract visiting exhibitions.

Nicely framed art and interesting museum located in a complex with a children's exploration area and the Burpee Museum. Relatively inexpensive place to escape the heat or rain. The exhibit was mostly a regional artist competition. Many pieces to look at, but only one bench on the top floor. I'd liked to have enjoyed the pieces more by sitting and reflecting.

On site parking was ample and free of charge. Average entry admission charged at the door. Open 10-5 daily.

Whenever I visit a new town I like to check out their art museums. This one did not disappoint. There was a traveling exhibit of mid 20th century modern art, which really took me back to my visits to the Milwaukee Art Center in the ‘70’s, which had just benefitted from a huge modern art bequest. It made for a very pleasurable experience.

This is part of a large complex with a natural history museum, dance school, art museum and discovery museum. They were setting up for a big art festival with food and music that looked fun, but we were early and were just looking for art. The girl working st the front desk was so nice. We enjoyed talking to her, but the art was a little pathetic. There are two floors. The top floor had a special exhibit that was photographs on canvas and another room of oil paintings by one artist of herself in various scenes. The bottom floor was black and white photographs and part of the permanent collection. They were not interesting to us at all. Maybe others will find it more interesting. There was a little gift shop that was nice.

Huge space with few pictures. The main theme of most of the displays had to do with single people poses - mostly of women.

The Deborah Butterfield yellow horse is a knockout at the entrance
Inside there is a main gallery with a side gallery and a full floor 1 flight down.
2 contemporary artists are showing now

We remember a fab show of the work of self taught local resident, Stephen Anderson they mounted a few years ago.

Do visit and support this regional gem

Daughter had the opportunity to go with friends and take an art class. I drove and was able to observe. Instructor was very good and really challenged the kids

We saw this as we walked by to go to the Natural History Museum. It was free, not sure if we went under Blue Star Museums or not. Gift shop.

Very modern. Docent encouraged the kids to touch the typewriters and the tent exhibit (kids ignored this). Attended with my 4 kids, 9-16.

Of the 4 typewriters, only 1 worked. All the children loved this exhibit the most. I had no idea they knew so little about typewriters.

The older kids liked the odd fairy tales. The shark girl was just too odd for me.

Sat briefly in the log circle with my daughter.

The Rockford Art Museum is actually in one half of the building that houses the Discovery Center Museum. There is plenty of parking and the admission is very reasonable. There is a lot of interesting art, but I'll echo another reviewer and say that there didn't seem to be enough seating. It is handicapped accessible. Admission is quite reasonable, especially if you are a senior. The staff was friendly.
