Still excavating. Small museum very nice with good English. Walk amongst 4 pyramids on the acropolis (#5 being worked on now). A guide helps a lot.

This is another archeological site of the Mayans, dating back to 900 BC. The mounds here are just the tip of the iceberg that will lead future archeologists into understanding the past. The mound area seems to be more ceremonial in nature, but there is evidence of residential as well. An interesting contrast to the Joya de Ceran site

There is a small museum that you walk through prior to getting to the San Andres site. Take some time to read through the artifacts in the museum to learn about the history of the site. There are some drawing that show what they expect the site to look like. There is also a colonial indigo production center that you will see. The archaeological site itself is still in need of more excavating so there is not that much to see in comparison to some other sites. That being said, you can get a good idea of what the site would look like if it was fully excavated by comparing to the drawings they had in the museum.

If one is nearby - and interested in archeology - then, as the saying goes, "why not?" It's certainly not Tikal...or Chichén Itza...or any other marginally significant site in and around Central America. For for 15-20 minutes...why not? (This said, note that foreigners should be prepared to pay 300% of the local price to get it -- worth it? Maybe...as long as one appreciates archeology...really appreciates archeology!)

If you only visit San Andrés ruins, don't go. But as part of a day trip to visit Joya de Cerén , then is a goof option. Not spectacular and very feew buildings are aible to see, but is part of the history and i do not regret to have visited it.

Visited this site as part of an Overseas Adventure Travel (OAT) tour package. Fortunately we had a bilingual guide to explain everything to us. If you don't already have a good knowledge of the Mayans and/or have a knowledgeable guide you might miss a lot here. The pyramids are still mainly underground (i.e. to preserve them), so a thorough explanation of what is going on helps a lot. Currently there isn't any active archaeological excavation going on. The museum is not that much. It is open air; but still can be stuffy (i.e. no air movement) on a hot day too. Fortunately there is a snack bar with real cold liquid refreshments.

We started our Mayan tour at San Andres. The museum is nice. We probably should have asked for a guided tour as it was a little hard to identify the various buildings once we were out on the site

I had visited the Joya de ceren prior, definitely recommend seeing both. They're fairly close by and compliment each other well. This is a beautiful are to visit with great information about mesoamerican history. I went during a school field trip day. A little noisy with the kids but it's great that they are learning about their history and culture. Also had a minuta in the crafts area, pretty bland, I'd save your money for a minuta else where.

We went to Joya de Ceren earlier that day (and had been to Casa Blanca and Tazumal the day before), so we were well prepared for this visit, but according to us it´s the least interesting of the four sites. The obraje de añil was closed off because of some construction work it said (no action to observe), the campana is only to be seen from very far away, which leaves the akropolis. The museum is interesting.

This was a very nice and quite place to visit. There was not crowd when we went. It has a really nice outdoors setting. Loved the fact one can walk around around ancient Maya ceremonial and administrative buildings.
