The Spirit...

The Spirit of Peoria is an authentic paddlewheel driven vessel.

The Spirit has no props or thrusters, and is powered by twin Caterpillar 3412 diesel gensets, producing 700 kilowatts combined in 208 volt 3-phase voltage. The power is rectified using railroad-style rectifiers, probably from a GM GP38. The DC voltage goes to two traction engines, also from a GM locomotive, which drive the paddlewheel via two forty-foot-long by one-foot-wide chains. This allows the boat to be comparatively fast and efficient, burning approximately 15 gallons (57L) of diesel fuel an hour, with a top speed of over 15 mph (24 km/h).

Its shallow draft of 4' enables the Spirit to land in just about any river town. Boarding is by 30' long boarding stages

The boat is owned and captained by G. Alex Grieves, and co-captained by Alice Grady and Dylan Masonholder. It routinely travels up and down the Illinois River and Mississippi River.

This was our third trip on an overnite riverboat excursion, and our first on the Spirit of Peoria. This trip took us from Peoria to Hannibal. Very well organized and a great adventure. Captain Alex and his crew were super and the entertainment crew of Barry, Ted and Fox with their mix of song and river lore was unforgettable. And... More

We went on a 90 minute day cruise and really enjoyed it. We purchased our tickets at the booth and the employee kindly offered us a discount on each ticket since we had a large group. Our kids saw Asian carp jumping out of the water as we started off which was fun. They had a nice snack and gift... More

It seems like where ever we go we end up taking a boat ride. The spirit of Peoria is a very nice boat. Pretty, clean, nice bathrooms, nice places to sit outside. The weather was perfect. If I lived in Peoira I think this would be the perfect place for an office party!

We went on the "Land of Lincoln" three day dour down the Illinois and Mississippi rivers. This was a great trip even though two our of the three days it was rainy. The food served on-board was outstanding - I mean really outstanding. The provided a lot of musical entertainment as well as a story teller who told a lot... More

This trip is FANTASTIC. Captain Alex and the crew were just great. The story tellers and entertainers were tremendous, sharing a massive a amount of information about Mr. Lincoln. Chef Debbie and the kitchen crew did miracles from a small space. The meals were all beyond belief. Great options and selection. Going down the river was peaceful, interesting and relaxing.... More

We took a ride on the Spirit of Peoria. The only issue with our trip was the time of year it was super cold! It would have been interesting if there was more talk about the history of the area, the boat and what we were traveling past. Not being from the area it was super pretty to see the... More

One of the best Riverboat Cruises you'll ever go on! Great food, Great staff, Great entertainment and reasonably priced. The Land of Lincoln Cruise was the most informative and relaxing. The Illinois River is gorgeous! This is a trip you CANNOT miss!

I take my children every year on a riverboat cruise. It's a couple hours of relaxing fun while watching the boats, the paddle wheel, the Asian carp jumping out of the water, and seeing how the shoreline changes every year.
