About
The powermuseum is a vibrant museum which sheds light on the origin of industrial Norway. Odda and Tyssedal went from being an important tourist resort to being an area of pioneering hypropower and industrial expansion. Hydropower and industry were crucial to the shaping of Norway in the 20th Century. For generations, the power cathedral by the fjord transformed roaring waterfalls into lighting and heating. Today the beautiful hydropower plant is an industrial heritagesite, as well as a vibrant museum which offers a wide spectre of activities: films and exhibitions, guided tours, concerts and plays, museum shop and cafeteria, workers houses, science center, hikes to caves and tunnels. Welcome to Tyssedal - a different and dramatic Hardanger!

The lady at the reception desk was all so welcoming, and she guided me throughout the historical events pretty well! Unfortunately, I didn't have time to take the guided tour. I strolled through the main engine hall, the exposition house, and I watched the 30-minute film which was quite informative, although it doesn't say anything about why the power station closed. Also, as an electrical engineer, I would really appreciate some more detailed technical information about the power plant as well. Maybe this information is available with the guided tours. Generally, I learned a lot and my perspective about Tyssedal and Odda changed dramatically! Totally worth visiting if you're passing nearby, and maybe give them a call the day you are visiting to make sure about the guided tour time schedule!

I abandoned my plans to tour around some fjords after I found out this museum existed; it really looked interesting to me. The style of the building, the massive machines, the caves, the history..

It’s easy to find, and the woman at the desk was very welcoming. She started an English movie about why the plant was build, which was lengthy but very informative.

However, my visit was quite a disappointment. Most people leaving a positive review here did the guided tour, but no tours were conducted on the day I visited (21st of August).

Without a guide, you cannot enter the control room, caves and other areas except for the main hall. Additionally, the few information displays really felt short in explaining how the plant worked. So I was left strolling around the beautiful building, trying to understand what I was looking at.

Next to the lack of information and being limited to only the main hall I noticed a lot of stuff lying around everywhere that did not have anything to do with the plant. It felt messy.

A lot of effort has been put into preserving this building. Some more efforts should be put into better exhibitions. The website could also be more informative about when guided tours will be offered; if I knew beforehand that no tours would be offered I would not have visited.

Thank you so much for your informative critisism. We are very sorry that your experience was this negative. Due to the pandemic, our season was cut short this year, as was the number of guides at the end of the season (when you visited). That is of course no excuse, we should have let you know that you would have been welcome with your questions, as well as giving you a thourogh introduction before we let you go on your own in the powerstation. As to the "clutter", it is to say that we must improve on that, although we do not have many alternatives to storing big things that are crucial to our work on maintaining the building. Tables, chairs and the stage are necessary as we offer concerts and banquets, as well as the powerstation is to let for seminars and conferenses. This as an explanation to your pictures. Nevertheless we wish to improve, and will evaluate this in the next days. Hopefully we may see you as guest again some other time. Best regards from the Kraftmuseet.

This museum gives insight into the rise of Norwegian people from poor farmers to rich powerful industrial nation.
Very detailed representations were on display.
English translation was available.
We could not get guides on our day of visit, as they were short of staff.
Exhibitions were good, but we could not get any information about big machines and turbines, without a guide.

The display board sums up the location well: "This museum is more than just a museum."
In fact, the building itself represents a cultural heritage and visionary architectural project. Impressive.

To appreciate the museum better, try to time your visit with the guided tours (which run three times each day).

It is an interesting power plant to see - but be sure to take the guided tour! Without a tour it is just a 30-min film (not really interesting) and a building with old aggregators, but with the guide you can get the history of the plant and many interesting facts. The film+tour took altogether 1.5 hours. Our tour guide was really nice and knowledgeable, made our visit really enjoyable. Highly recommended! P.S. Do the hike to Lilletop after your visit, the start of the trail is just a couple of minutes from the plant by car. The path is nice, a bit steep but manageable and short (approx. 30 minutes) and the view to the fjord and the pipes going down to the hydropower plant are spectacular from above.

Thank you juno_usa! So glad you enjoyed your stay. We also recommend the guided tour, both at the museum and at Lilletopp.

Great fusion of architecture and old electrical machinery but also the exhibit explains why it was built and the whole opportunity hydro power gave to Norway. Check out the old control room on the first floor very art deco.

In Tyssedal you will fint the Lilletopp museum. If you walk from sea level down at the museum in the fjord, it will take about 45 minutes to one hour to walk up to the power station up in the mountains.
You can also drive a bit, and just hike the last bit (about 20 minutes of hiking each way).

There you will find stunning views of Odda, Tyssedal and the Hardangerfjord. You can get a guided tour around the compound from very good guides. All at a cost of about 50 NOK. (about 5 euro).
You will get interesting info about how the workers lived up there, and you will get a walk in the tunnels in the mountains where the water used to flow on its way to the pipes.
Theres a movie shown if you want, inside the tunnels.
The guides are good and knows their history!
So if you dont fancy a trip to Trolltunga, or just dont want to spend 8 ours walking in queue with chinese tourists on that path, this might be a very good alternative, and a lot shorter :)
The climbing can be done on sneakers, but is pretty steep at some levels. But no worries for the common man/woman :)

We paid 50 NOK per person for entry into the museum with a tour included. We were able to see the entire old hydro building with all the old generators and controls. The tour was very interesting and we were able to touch and try using everything. Roughly about a 30 minute tour and then spent about 15 minutes walking around on our own after.

We stumbled upon the hydropower museum and it turned out to be a really great find. Really well organised. They start you off with an interesting historical exhibit about the local area and its hydropower history followed by a short intro film (available in english). Then you make your way into the hydropower plant for more of an explore. Its a beautiful building filled with fascinating machinery. Would highly recommend!
