What one woman can do. - The home that became a museum. In the last three decades, hundreds of thousands of people visited Petra. The house and garden have taken the shape of a nature museum but never the less Sunnuhlid was primarily Petra's home. This is a beautiful garden with lovely flowers and lots of stones and minerals. It sells souvenirs made from stones she and her family has collected and made necklaces, rings, candle holders and lots more. People come here for all kinds of reasons. Most of them because of the beauty of the minerals, others come because of their interest in geology and others still because they believe that the stones possess some energy or power. This is biggest private stone collection in the world and is one of the most visited attraction in East-coast of Iceland.

This is interesting however It would have been nice if the stones were labeled because I do not know much about rocks and did not know what half of what I was seeing was.

My wife routinely collects a rock from places we travel, so this piqued our interest when planning our stops on our 10 day trip around Iceland. We were not disappointed. All of these specimens were collected by one woman, Petra, during her lifetime and the...More

We stopped at Petra's on our drive around Iceland. It is an interesting stop if you like rocks. There is a large collection of rocks on display that Petra had collected through her lifetime.

The amount and variety of stones Petra collected during her life is nothing short of astounding. Her family continues to run this place with the stones displayed throughout the gardens and inside Petra's house situated amongst the mountains of the beautiful East Fjords. Definitely worth...More

What a gem (pun intended). This incredible lady was a compulsive collector and her main passion was geology. But this isn't just a dusty old collection of rocks - its idiosyncratically displayed in a perfect little garden full of quirky corners and beautiful plants. There's...More

In some circles the remarkable woman who collected most of these rocks would be called a hoarder. But she was a remarkable woman with a mission - to collect all the different rocks in Iceland. Great display. Could have benefited with a bit more explanation...More

It is amazing how driven this lady was to collect her rocks & gemstones! She left family behind when the calling came for her to go on her excursions. She certainly wasn't wife or mother of the year, but her legacy to her family is...More

This is a fascinating collection and Petra must have been quite a character. We enjoyed looking at the collection and the garden and admire the effort involved. What a great legacy to leave your family that hopefully will live on for years to come. Make...More

If you are driving through the area, this is a great stop for an hour or so. The extensive stone collection is impressive - so many colors, shapes, and designs. I had no idea so many rare stones were found in the surrounding lands -...More

This is an interesting stop and a nice place to stretch your legs if driving the ring road. The fee is 1500 ISK pp. Petra's legacy is pretty cool. The stones are beautiful and there is a nice small garden to walk around.
