Great forest preserves with many activities for the whole family. We love these forest preserves for hiking, camping and fun interactive activities. Check out the play dates with nature, Discovery Museum and Independence Grove hiking, play grounds, water sports for the whole family.

The great outdoors made safe, clean and fun! Get outside with your family and friends and be active. Some of the preserves are dog friendly, some have activities - canoeing, swimming, biking, etc. Look up all the info you need on the website and visit them ALL.

Enjoy the cool breezes and negative ions of the 3/4 mile rocky beach at the Fort Sheridan Forest Preserve. You need to hike or bike down from the parking lot. There are two toilets in the lot, but none at the beach. Bring your own drinking water as well. Bird-watch, picnic and/or relax.
Enter at Simonds Way, off Sheridan Road. Follow the signs to the parking lot. It's an easy walk down to the lake -- even while pushing your stroller, carrying your chairs, and shlepping your lunch and sunscreen. This is a non-swimming/wading beach. There are no life guards.

My wife and I picked this venue for its natural beauty and the ability to provide Ceremony only services. Well thats where the problem lies. The catering company is a separate entity from forest preserve. If you do not book their catering and only use the premises for the ceremony you are treated like a red headed step child. 1. No mention of another Wedding going on that day and were forced to tell our guest they needed to use the outdoor restrooms on a rainy day. 2. We ordered a simple easel they and their only responsibility and they managed to forget to put it out. 3. The chairs were not set out the way we instructed and they did not sweep the grounds before our guest arrived. 4. Nobody had a clue where to go for the ceremony as they told us the gate keeper would instruct them and everyone went to the main building this made several people late for the ceremony. I would NEVER hold another event at this establishment!

Enjoyed another delightful hike on the paths of the forest preserve. They are very well maintained. You can hike for different distances but it is always well maintained and beautiful. We enjoyed the wildlife. We felt very safe on the path.

The Lake County Forest Preserves have beautiful bike and hiking trails throughout the County. My favorite is the DesPlaines River Trail that runs from the Wisconsin Border into Cook County. Great places for picnicking and family outings.

If you like to bike or walk trails, check out the EXTENSIVE network of trails in the Lake County Forest Preserve system. The Des Plaines River Trail is one of the finest in the country. Independence Grove is a great launching off point. Check out their site online for the latest trail maps.

If you come to Libertyville, a must-do is the Forest Preserve Independence Grove. It is HUGE, native, and caters to all types of recreationalist: boating, swimming, volleyball, fishing, roller-blading, biking, hiking, horseback riding, picnicking, events, weddings/receptions, etc. It is a full day of fun for families, friends, corporate events--all in one location. And because the park is enormous, it never feels crowded or congested. Coming here to play and relax is something we do in this preserve all year round. Dog park is now connected and renovated, so bring your furry family member also! Free for Lake County residents too, so you cannot beat that price.
