We make a few trips to "Our Rock" each year. Proposed there in October 2012 when we could walk out to the rock. When river level is around 5 foot at Cape Girardeau you can get out to the rock. They have signs posted warning to not climb it. There is a lot of rock just south of Tower Rock that is accessable unless river is higher than normal. From there you get a different view.

We went when the river was low and you could walk to the Rock. News stations were broadcasting it and a lot of people showed up. What you need to know: the road is mostly gravel, it's very narrow, if there are a lot of people there is no place to park, if cars are parked along the road you can't have two way traffic. Don't park next to the train tracks, the train will hit you. It was an hour and a half drive to get there. Parked along the road and walked probably a quarter of a mile to get to the bank. The bank is very steep, if you have difficulty walking, this isn't something you want to do. Once you get down the bank the terrain is very uneven, there are rocks that are uneven and not solid. Again, if you don't do well walking please don't go. On the north end of the rock on the river side the current was very strong. Made it back to the bank and walked back to the car. Traffic was horrendous, luckily a nice man let us turn around and get in front of him. Took us a half an hour to get back to highway A. This was about a mile. And the dust from the road was thick. Check before you go as you may end up walking from highway A.

Tower Rock is a large rock that rises out of the water about 20 yards off the bank of the Missouri side of the Mississippi River. When the river is in its lowest stages, it's possible to walk out to the rock and climb it, which is pretty cool, but when the river is up, it's just a pretty cool rock to look at. There's not a lot of parking, and it's kind of remote, and the roads to get to the rock are gravel and windy.

We like coming here just to see how different it is each time. Every season is a good photo op...the last time we were there,...several years ago...the river was so low people were actually able to walk out to the rock. Stunning! It is off the beaten path, but well worth the time...

We drove to Tower Rock, and it was much farther and more secluded than we thought it would be from the map, but was worth the drive. It is a large towering rock with trees growing on top of it, and after viewing it from the parking area, we walked up a very steep trail to view it from above.

A trip to Tower Rock is always a treat. I have been there many times, it is absolutely out of the way, and that is part of the fun. Traveling there takes a person though many towns in East Perry County that quaint and seem to be from another era. Tower Rock itself is magnificent and definitely something to everyone should see at least once. It was good enough for Lewis and Clark, and it is more than good enough for me.

Really, one look and you're done. If you are passing by stop, it won't take long. Don't go out of your way.

At the end of Highway A in Perry County, you will come to a sign for the Tower Rock Conservation Area. Then you take a mostly unimproved road for a half-mile, cross the tracks, and reach the rustic parking area across from the rock. For geologic and photo hounds, this is a great spot to see an impressive rock formation. There is a board with minimal historic information and a few pictures that show the Tower Rock at low water levels. Today, the river is flowing fast and high. It is a one of a kind natural attraction in Missouri, just not very well developed. Maybe your visit will be private like ours!

Remote location, but a true landmark. Because the swift waters of the Mississippi flow around it, I've been told there are dangerous whirlpools just south of it. You can only access it by boat, unless there is a severe drought like back in 2012.

Very interesting place! Be careful if you are going to climb, you might want to take some rope with you.
