We visited the Batang Palupuh Nature Reserve in August 2019. Our local naturalist guide Joni, who is living here, had a high level of knowledge about flora and fauna in the reserve. Amazingly, he also has acurate knowledge about the location of the famous giant flowers: Rafflesia arnoldii.
Thanks to Joni, after a 30 minutes trek in the jungle, we have seen the rafflesia blooming at 2 stages.
A very interesting botanic visit!!!

Jul 2019 • Family
had a guide of 300.000 because they where in bloom and our homestay arranged this after we heard that they where in bloom there...Normally should be around 100.000 rp
There where 2 big ones in bloom and two young ones which looked like alien eggs. on a liana.after a a half hour walk through prestine jungle with he sounds of gibbons!
You can arrange transport from bukittingi for a go car (like ueber taxi, from telephone) taxi who will wait untill you have done the trip.
Afterwards you can be offerd- if you like- coffee luwak from the tegion, made by wild non domestic civet cats, but the coffe lacks somewhat in taste and is a steep 250.000 rp. a packet.

Nice park
Mar 2019 • Couples
We went to this park by (rented) motorbike. The road is good and not difficult to drive. It took us about half an hour from Bukittinggi. When we arrived, a guy on a motorbike came to us and told us he was a guide. The price was fair and he know a flower, which was nearly blooming. The walk to the forest was nice and easy and he told a lot of things about the spices. So it was well worth the vidit1

A beautiful, fascinating, challenging real jungle trek!
Sep 2016 • Family
This is absolutely the highlight of my visit to Bukittinggi! It is not far from Bukittingi only 20 minutes drive. You can either go by car, motorbike or public bus. Wgen you take public bus, tell the driver to stop at Rafflessia. As you get off you will see a Raflessia Centre sign. Inside there are local rangers that can take you to the jungle to watch the raflessia flowers if one of them blooms. The way to the flower site is wonderful...it was a wet Seprember morning...we walked passing the villagers and the villages. Along tfe way you will see lush green paddy fields, a little mosque in the middle, a flowing small river, a green and dense hill that we were moving towards. There are coffee plantation along the way too. As we walked, the track becomes harder. It was covers with vegetation so we must use our hands to remove them. The track was small, slipery, dense (many stumbling trees), but breathtakingly beautiful....sometimes we walked IN the creek...till we reached a small waterfall where tge Raflessia was. It was not blooming but there were two of them, round in shape with their closed petals. I enjoyed every step I made in discovering Raflessia!

I must warned you though....there are tiny leech along the trek. They suck your blood a little but are not dangerous and will not harm you. To my opinion, they are just disgusting. Infact locals use it for medication. A covered shoes with ling socks would be a good gear.

They have it all year round!
Nov 2012 • Solo
I'd always wanted to see one. So, I took the chance when I heard that there are so many blooms in the Palupuh hills that you could see one anytime, even though it takes months and years before the flower matures.

I was fortunate to see one which was in bloom, a dead one by its side and another one yet to mature all in the same spot.

You can find out the guide names from the Bedudal Cafe in Bukittinggi. For me, I got another guide who was just taking a white couple into the hills at that time.

Don't miss this!

So lucky to see Rafflesia in bloom!
Oct 2012 • Couples
West Sumatra is one of the few places on Earth to see the largest flower - Rafflesia Arnoldi. Staying in Bukittinggi we could not miss our chance! We asked at Bedudal Cafe in Bukittinggi and they informed us that yes, there was a Rafflesia flower blooming at the moment (it was the beginning oа October)! They arranged this great trip for us.

Rafflesia Park is located very close to Bukittinggi. We went by car and it took no more than 20 minutes. Upon arrival you need to hire a local guide (50 000 IDR) who can show the way to the flower. We went through a nice countryside, passed by rice fields and steep cliffs and then entered the jungle. After a short walk we saw something that looked like volleyballs, and that were Rafflesia buds. And after a few step more - WOW! A huge red Rafflesia flower was on the floor! Our guide explained that it was 6 days old and tomorrow it would die, as blooming only lasts 7 days. So we were lucky!!

If you want to see it, you should ask in Bukittinggi, if there is a flower in bloom people will know it! And also in the Nature conservation center there is a Coffee Luwak house where they make this famous coffee and you can try and buy. Good luck to see fantastic Rafflesia!
